News Of Margaret Thatcher’s Death And The End Of Terror
“ULTIMATE HONOUR FOR LADY THATCHER,” announces the Mail on its front page.
What’s it to be? An Audience With Maggie, live on ITV, with the Iron Lady fielding questions from other 1980s stars, like TV’s Dirty Den, radio’s Kid Jensen and laughs with Freddie Starr, culminating in a duet in which Mike Yarwood plays Ronnie Renee-gan to Maggie’s Renato?
“Lady Thatcher to be honoured with State funeral,” says the paper, “but Palace fears there might not be enough troops to line streets of London.”
The Mail says there are fears “that there are insufficient troops available to line the route because the Armed Forces are so overstretched in Afghanistan and Iraq”.
Might Maggie hang on a bit until the War on Terror is at an end? Or else, the War on Terror will end when Maggie turns her last. Although any gaps in the ranks kerb-side could be filled by taller cub scouts, or military quick-change artiste Prince William keeping pace with the procession?
The Mail does not wish to alarm Thatcher. Indeed, it takes pains to remind her and its readers that Maggie remains in fine fettle.
“Despite her age, Lady Thatcher is in good health”; “Lady Thatcher is currently in good health”; “This does not reflect any concern over Lady Thatcher’s health”; “a close friend said last night: ‘Lady T has been on fine form lately”.
Which makes us wonder why news of Thatcher’s funeral should appear today? And if the news is a slow as the good Baroness…

I couldn’t live in 70s Britain - homophobic, racist, all those strikes, no lattes. Mrs T may have swept through the land like the plague - but sometimes bad things have better outcomes than good.

Maggie bashing - how fashionable and politically correct. May I point out she had one of the longest continuous tenures as Prime Minister ever in one of the most developed democracies in the world! Presumably somebody voted for her. Some people may have rosy romantic views of a socialist state under Callaghan where the unions were the good guys and knew what was best for us. I lived through it as an adult found the reality somewhat different. All I know is I remember Britian before and after Thatcherism. Trust me after was better.

Sod the state funeral - how about a national holiday instead
July 14th, 2008 at 9:42 am
they’ll need more than a few troops lining the streets of London to stop people shouting abuse and throwing things at her coffin - she devastated many communities with her policies and those people have not forgotten.
if the powers that be have any sense, they’ll scrap the idea completely.

Political greatness comes in many forms both good and evil. Hitler and Churchill being two prime examples. Dubya aside it in general takes a person of remarkable abilities to become the leader of any country and it is easy for us lesser mortals standing on the sidelines to be critical. Most of us would simply collapse under the strain of leading a country of 50 million people. What is certian is that Maggie was not evil. Sure she made mistakes, who’s perfect, but speaking as someone who can remember the Winter of discontent I for one am glad that thanks mainly to her - government is in parliament where it belongs and not in the hands of the unions. Does she deserve a state funeral? Why not. The Queen Mother who for most of her life as far as I can see did little more than lead a completely hedonistic life got one. Given the choice honor Maggie anyday.

They should throw a big party with free booze and Her Haughtiness in an open casket.
I’d turn up for a look, just to make sure that the evil old bugger was actually dead.

I have no idea who makes such decisions ( awarding of State Funerals ) but clearly they resisted Political Correctness and in its’ agonizing death grimace can shine forth triumphantly ‘ They Did Not Pass ! ‘
Well done those chaps and let’s all look foward to a jolly good, if not too soon, show as the new Era with a new Dave awakens and bids dear Maggie fond farewell happy in the knowledge that her ideals are in safe hands once more ( maybe).

When I first noticed the comments about Margaret Thatcher to be given a state funeral I thought she had died. The Thatcher years in power at No.IO certainly continue to be times that are still spoken about by many members of the general public. Some people think that Maggie was a brilliant leader who “saved ” England from going down the tube but others regard her as “obnoxious”. I personally don’t like her on a personal level but admit that she did show her own particular style of leadership.
I think Maggie’s hairstyle is a reflection of her mentality and her way of dealing with people and policies…….very rigid and set in her ways. She took England into an undeclared war with Argentina over the disputed Falkland islands amid her claims that it was British soveriegn terrority and of the rights of its 500 inhabitants to remain British. It is indeed very ironic that the UK and its government are now more than happy to give up the rights of British citizens to be part of an expanding European Community, and even deny a referendum regarding the EEC to British citizens. In my book, the military sent to the Falklands was much more about economic and the vast oil reserves under the waters surrounding those remote islands.
So why was Margaret Thatcher seen as a successful leader? Well, one reason was the fact that she was the first woman PM and many of the men with leadership positions around Maggie(upper-class wankers) simply didn’t know how to handle Maggie and her personality. It was Jeffery Howell who later stated that “she spoke to grown men like school boys” in a personal attack on her.
Yes, there was also revolts concerning her introduction of the Poll tax(where a nurse on a small income would have paid the same tax as a millionaire!) and she also took away the milk from young school childen as one of her decisions.
The long dispute during the Thatcher years with the coal miners also showed that she could be a right bastard regarding the mining industry and many mines that were making a profit. Was Thatcher’s hardline against miners and closing the pits more to do with breaking up areas that traditonally voted for the Labour party?
So does Margaret Thatcher deserve a state funeral when her days are up? No, is my opinion.Churchill was a much greater leader than Maggie and its her family and not the British taxpaper who should foot the bill. This won’t happen of course, because the Brits and the establishment do like to show an event and promote a persons status on the world stage, and are brilliant at doing so.
So how did Magggie rate as a mother? Well, her son Mark Thatcher certainly got himself into deep shit in Africa and had to pay 285,000 fine, and now, is refused entry into the USA. His reputation is very poor but her daughter has a slightly more favourable public image.
Finally, Margaret’s mouth and brain took her a long way but Maggie apparently, many years ago had lessons to improve her speaking ability. She knew that in England to reach the top she would often be judged the first time she opened her mouth. How true!
A GREAT leader who derserves a state funeral? Anyone who(like Maggie did ) say that
General Pinchet of Chile was “a friend of Britain” really cannot be taken totally seriously. He was another piece of garbage who abused power and the families of the 33,000 citizens who were murdered under his rule would shout that truth into the stony face of Margaret Thatcher !

Actually I meant “is” not “was” a remarkable person. Sorry Maggie live long and prosper.
July 13th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
Don’t see why she deserves a state funeral any less than that lot a Buck house who were just born to the right people at the right time. I might not agree with everything she did but by any measure she was a remarkable person and definitely one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Mind you I don’t envy the job of the person who has to drive a wooden stake through her heart.

One of the best jokes I ever heard was:
“Why is the new £1 coin called a Maggie??”
Because it’s hard, brassy, and thinks it’s a Sovereign…
Told that in a Tory Club one evening. It went so quiet you could have spotted a Tony Blair lie almost at once.
July 13th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
She won’t need a lead lined coffin will she?
July 13th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
Ah dear dear Maggie, the last of the true labourites, further to the left than tory blair or Pa’ Broon.

I doubt that either of them even know the place exists…
