Not More Madeleine McCann Jokes
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
METRO: “When is serious news seriously funny?”
Nearly always if it’s on ITV?
Topical comedy can be something of a hot potato. Take last year’s most prominent UK news story: the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Not even the most talented comedians could get away with touching it with a bargepole.
Well, no. This one was funny. But not these.
Lovable circuit rascal Silky is making it possible to get up close and personal with the funny side of the headlines with his new night, The Verve Show. Silky plays host as four panellists - this time around Andrew O’Neill, Isma Almas, Barry Dodds and, um, me - chew the news and spit it out with a comedy coating.
It’s a less hairy Spit The Dog…

Forgot to add that I’m surprised Sky is not involved. At the height of the hang-him-high campaign, I wrote to Sky to say how disgusted I was at the disgraceful standard of their reporting on, for example, his private life, and their apparent acceptance there was substance behind his being made an arguido. I’m not saying that the PJ would make someone an arguido without any reason at all, but the status is more akin to being “of interest” to the police than immediately preceding arrest. Sky could have prejudiced many viewers against Murat, disgraceful behaviour for supposedly professional broadcasters. What they did was simply immoral.
I hope the press, at any rate, has learnt its lesson over the Madeleine McCann case.
July 15th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
A foregone conclusion but I’m delighted about the pay-out to Murat.
Not that money can really compensate for what he’s gone through. And still an arguido.
By the way, I wonder if someone got it slightly wrong and thought the announcement would be made on 14th instead of 15th July???!!!!
And to think I was waiting all day yesterday for some significant piece of news…..!!
July 15th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Or even better …. top of page under Madeleine McCann

RIGHT! FUCK IT!
I KNOW WHEN I AM NOT WANTED.
I WAS REJECTED FROM THE BROWNIES!
I am going to watch some dog detectives on ITV Granadaland in UK but may return to piss you all off later!.
I have a full bottle of Baileys here!
Administrator: I was rejected by a few Brownies too. I sympathise.
Girl Guides did their best to heal the wounds and show me the way.
I shall be eternally grateful to Beaver Patrol’s Rangers.

69 Julie: “Just as I truly believe that Madeleine was NOT kidnapped, I truly believe that Robert Murat played no part in her disappearance.”
I agree. [I think] the McCann and a couple of the Tapas Seven fingered Robert Murat to divert attention from themselves. I think this was diabolical: not only was RM innocent, he had been trying to help find their missing child! I think this new, highly regarded PR man’s speaking out for RM is an indication that soon RM’s arguido status will be lifted soon. As for the McCanns and a couple of their friends: I think the PJ will charge them with more than mere neglect or abandonment. The McCann lawyers may prevent the McCanns from ever being tried, but it will be satisfying to hear the PJ say officially that the McCanns are lying about having had nothing to do with Madeleine’s appearance.

Did Clarence supply Murat stories at that time?

P’rhaps he’s next in the “you-spoke-crap-about-me-now-you-pay” firing line …. so he’s looking for another job

I feel that the “public” didn’t particularly want the type of rubbish that was
printed. I think that, overall, they prefer unbiased, incisive and professional
journalism. ”
Well, true, “the public” doesn’t exist, that was a bit simplified.
” Which is not what they got. ”
Depends on which paper they bought? (While I must say, I haven’t followed the story at the time Murat was in the frame. I can only hope that some papers were unbiased.)
” How do you explain the falling circulation figures of those papers throughout
that period ? ”
Would be encouraging, if true.
