Guantanamo bay - not exactly Americas finest hour. Can you imagine Americas reaction if they lost a war and the foreign power in question held several hundred US combatants on a island for years on end without trial or legal representation. They even cynically hold them outside US territory so apparently justifying the denial of rights that would be accorded to even the most vile criminal on the mainland USA. If you mention it to most Americans the usual reaction is “Guantanamo bay who what????” I think the problem is one indemic in the US psyche in that outside US borders “there be dragons!!!” and as such of no interest. I am sure that if most Americans fully understood what was going on there they would feel at the very least a little uncomfortable about what was being done in their name. As I said not Americas finest hour.
