Which Newspaper Will Buy Robert Murat’s Story?
MADELEINE McCann aguido Robert Murat has accepted £600,000 in libel damages over claims that he was involved in her abduction.
Outside court Mr Murat says: “The newspapers in this case brought about the total and utter destruction of mine and my family’s life and caused immense distress.”
Round up here.
Mr Murat, his friend Michaela Walczuch and IT consultant Sergey Malinka had all brought proceedings against Associated Newspapers, Express Newspapers, MGN Limited and News Group Newspapers over nearly 100 “seriously defamatory” articles.
Murat’s solicitor, Louis Charalambous, says:
“In particular, the defendants accept that none of the claimants had any involvement whatever in the abduction of Madeleine McCann.
“They accept that none of the claimants has any paedophile tendencies or connection with paedophiles or paedophile websites and that none of them lied to the police or obstructed the investigations.
“They accept that Mr Murat’s actions after the abduction were entirely proper and were motivated by a desire to help find Madeleine McCann. He became a volunteer translator for the Portuguese police and did everything he could to assist the investigation.
“Ms Walczuch was never suspected or accused of any involvement in the abduction of Madeleine McCann. Mr Malinka was not guilty of any sexual misconduct and has no criminal convictions.”
Now which paper will buy the rights to his story and try to earn back some of their losses?

As you well know, the bright sparks of the legislative arm will judge as they think necessary. If the McCanns need to kicked in line, we can be assured that they have the Docs to do it.

Chenier, it was announced on Channel 9 TV news at 6:30 here in DC “that it was announced that ….gave their name and about missing child, “were going to be cleared….” the long and short of it was their arguido status was being removed and they were going to be cleared….so anyhow even over here the ‘news’ is travelling fast…

I must say goodnight as well.
Perhaps tomorrow we could revert to that staid old format we knew and loved…

Good night.
Hopes for better communication tomorrow [and wonder how long I'll be in Error 404 land this time...]

You can take your pick of the last 2 sentences…
July 18th, 2008 at 12:21 am
Spongebob,
I think the problem with today’s proceedings is that it made it very clear, to anyone familiar with the last 14 months or so, that whilst it started out as lunatic libels from the Loris of this world, it moved to libels which appeared to be based on information which appears to have been provided by the McCanns’ friends, spokesman, detectives etc.
You can tell I was in Court this morning from the number of ‘appears’ in that last sentence…
And that is a real problem for Team Mccann since it has almost certainly poisoned the well for any future attempt by them to sue the remainder of the british press which they didn’t sue the first time round.
On the other hand the Sun is apparently running a front page ‘McCanns cleared’ tomorrow, or, on Anorak time, today…
On the other hand the Sun is claimed to be running

So, are we in agreement that the damages for Murat are ‘a good thing’?
And, presumably, given the previous comments, that the damages for the McCanns, are not?

I’ve just finished reading the thread, Maria. Numbers have disappeared & it looks a bit strange.
I made my point last night, so no need to repeat it
And you seem to have done great effort today to display a sense of humour
Have a nice weekend [I understand you'll be away]. Hope someone will text you if Monday really turns out to be “exciting”.

The press are not what they were, whatever that romantic notion was. I was reading the Nick Davies’ book on the subject . I believe Chenier mentioned it recently too . Classic stuff. There are many other good reads re. our respected press.
That we might expect truth and balance: therein lies the challenge, but like most things, it is up to the public.

Good news that the press has been whipped into the line. Again. Can we now expect some reasonable reporting?
——————————————————
Good Lord, no! Shouldn’t think so. Didn’t have to shell out enough, did they?
I suppose it’s possible that, being the shy, sensitive souls they are, shrinking violets in fact, the gutter press journos are blushing today with shame and embarrassment and have decided to behave better in future. Especially as it was a repeat performance of the Mcs a few weeks ago.
Maaybe they can’t even show their faces in their locals any more.
But what do you think?!
July 17th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
same here Maria so don’t worry xx

Bizarre things going on with the threads… just posted onto a two day old thread.
anyway. Saul, wee man, I’m here for the next half hour. If you feel the need to abuse me, I’m making some time.
July 17th, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Better finish now. Work tomorrow, then a break for a few days. Won’t be on Anorak on Monday. How will I survive?! I’ll be able to get all the relevant reports but no computer access for a few days.
Can’t believe I won’t be here on site when the decision to charge/not charge/shelve/archive/close/continue investigation, or whatever, is going to be made public.
All these months and not in on the denouement….well, not the final denouement but pretty important day all the same.
The ketchup will really hit the fan whatever happens. And I’ll miss it…… Just my luck.

what’s going on tonight? Am I trippin? June - did you see your picture?
July 17th, 2008 at 11:21 pm
whoops
I had noticed that, whoops! I guess thousands will have a made a similar comment today regarding the £600k. Obviously it doesn’t really mean anyone would actually wish to have been in RM’s position. Several times that sum wouldn’t really compensate. Hopefully the settlement and apologies will, with careful handling of the information by the family, reassure his daughter in years to come.
I thought he came over very well today, did you?

Saul, will your manners be any better today, when I am here?

Maria-I am rarely serious. But anybody(yourself and most others excluded) who had bothered to read any of my posts would have realised that. It is easy to choose to be confrontational-i choose not to be and a s a result have a fulll and happy life with lots of friends and fun.
