Madeleine McCann: Portugal Police Search And Eilis O’Hanlon Empathises
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “Police hunt for Maddie ‘is still on’”
Portugal’s top cop has vowed to search “to the ends of the Earth” for Maddie McCann even though prosecutors have shelved the case. Almeida Rodrigues, head of the Judicial Police, said his detectives will chase up all leads until the 15-month mystery is solved.
No end in sight.
He said: “A case only stops being investigated if there is a successful criminal trial.”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Only McCanns know full pain of never-ending story - If you find the ambiguity hard to live with, imagine the trauma the McCanns have to endure, writes Eilis O’Hanlon”
Let’s empathise. Says O’Hanlon:
It’s difficult to know where the story can go from here.
But you’ve got a column to fill. Dig deep.
But it still feels as if an ending of sorts has been reached. The disappearance of Madeleine has become a part of history. That’s probably a shocking indictment of the shortness of our collective memory — but, reprehensible or not, it’s true.
It’s living history. Read about it today’s Irish Indy.
The internet obsessives will keep the flame burning a little longer, having determined long ago not to let a little thing like the facts stop them witch-hunting Kate and Gerry; but even they will give up eventually.
Read O’Hanlon’s column online.
And that’s why there’s still such an unwillingness among many to accept that the McCanns’ names really have been conclusively cleared. Take the Portuguese statement at face value, rather than deciphering it for clues that Madeleine’s parents really were guilty of her murder and are only being exonerated because they have powerful friends who put pressure on the authorities in Praia da Luz, and what it means is that there still isn’t closure and there’s precious little prospect of there ever being so. It means living with ambiguity.
Well, no. The McCanns are no longer suspects because there is no evidence to say otherwise. But hasn’t it all ended, O’Hanlon?

If Amaral cant prove his claim then there is no argument. And thats where he will come unstuck.

Jo, trust me, an author of fiction can be sued for libel and defamation.
I know several authors who have got caught in this just by inadvertently using a name. It’s dangerous territory.
Amaral will get well and truly nailed if he can’t prove everything he has written and his publishers won’t support him. They’ll bale.

jo
I dont know the legalities of it all but if Amaral makes a claim and is subsequently taken to court for libel wouldnt ‘he’ have to prove his claim as fact? Not the other way around.

The Smiths did contact the Portuguese police once they had returned to Ireland, but say they have had no contact with the officers investigating the case since May last year.
Amaral’s mind appears to be playing tricks if the above is factual.

yes….in relation to libel. Can the author of a book be sued for libel? To prove there is libel they would have to prove absolutely everything. Its when the real fun starts and this is what my post meant
I do hope they go for it

There is no DNA evidence from the FSS, the dogs alerts/indications appear to have been ahem, as useful as a chocolate teapot. Why would the AG perjure himself, no evidence against any of the former arguidos, what part of that simple phrase don’t the windylickers understand, or should I say windylickin denial brigade.

“The British journalists were annoyed because they found out too late that I had been in the United Kingdom. It ended up with Justine receiving loads of phone calls and arranging for a photo shoot on the way to the church, to pacify them”, Kate writes on the 5th of July, revealing a tactic that was adopted in the first days after the 3-year-old girl disappeared”
“I was very angry at a journalist today. I told her not to do so much detective work.”

“Holidaymakers who stayed at the resort where Madeleine McCann disappeared are being asked to provide DNA samples and fingerprints after detectives found evidence of a possible kidnapper,”
From the leaked PJ summary report:
“From the tests and inspections that were carried out, a biological residue was collected which supposedly carried identificative value. Faced with this, the same residue was sent to Interpol, in order to be compared with the compatible databases, page 3467-a.”
I suppose it is not categorically evidence of an abduction as it might prove to be unrelated, but it IS unexplained and it could be relevant.
There was also the shopkeeper who reported seeing a blonde woman outside the bedroom window at around the time Madeleine was reported missing, It might have been Kate desperately searching but then again it might not. If it had been Kate, then I would have imagined there would have been someone else with her but I don’t think anyone else was mentioned in the sighting.
