Madeleine McCann: Portugal Police Search And Eilis O’Hanlon Empathises
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
SUNDAY PEOPLE: “Police hunt for Maddie ‘is still on’”
Portugal’s top cop has vowed to search “to the ends of the Earth” for Maddie McCann even though prosecutors have shelved the case. Almeida Rodrigues, head of the Judicial Police, said his detectives will chase up all leads until the 15-month mystery is solved.
No end in sight.
He said: “A case only stops being investigated if there is a successful criminal trial.”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “Only McCanns know full pain of never-ending story - If you find the ambiguity hard to live with, imagine the trauma the McCanns have to endure, writes Eilis O’Hanlon”
Let’s empathise. Says O’Hanlon:
It’s difficult to know where the story can go from here.
But you’ve got a column to fill. Dig deep.
But it still feels as if an ending of sorts has been reached. The disappearance of Madeleine has become a part of history. That’s probably a shocking indictment of the shortness of our collective memory — but, reprehensible or not, it’s true.
It’s living history. Read about it today’s Irish Indy.
The internet obsessives will keep the flame burning a little longer, having determined long ago not to let a little thing like the facts stop them witch-hunting Kate and Gerry; but even they will give up eventually.
Read O’Hanlon’s column online.
And that’s why there’s still such an unwillingness among many to accept that the McCanns’ names really have been conclusively cleared. Take the Portuguese statement at face value, rather than deciphering it for clues that Madeleine’s parents really were guilty of her murder and are only being exonerated because they have powerful friends who put pressure on the authorities in Praia da Luz, and what it means is that there still isn’t closure and there’s precious little prospect of there ever being so. It means living with ambiguity.
Well, no. The McCanns are no longer suspects because there is no evidence to say otherwise. But hasn’t it all ended, O’Hanlon?

Exactly. Unfortunately it is very unusual to be discussing a missing child continuously for a year and a quarter. Unfortunately in most other cases life moves on. The McC’ s
are not letting that happen.

As the world marks the fi rst anniversary
of the disappearance
of Madeleine McCann,
a couple in Germany will be remembering
their six-year old son who went
missing in the Algarve 12 years ago.
Renè Hasèe, who was six, disappeared
from the Amoreira beach near
Aljezur on June 19, 1996.
His mother, Anita, a 37-year old
postal worker who was on holiday with
her partner Peter and René, told a German
newspaper at the time: “We had
just eaten something and gone down
to the beach.” It was around 6pm and
she said René was around 30 metres
in front of her when “suddenly our son
disappeared as if he had been swallowed
by the earth.”
She immediately notified the local
police, who, she claimed at the time,
were not very interested and did not
bother to search for René, telling her he
had probably drowned.
However, this recollection of events
is not shared by a GNR agent, who is still
working at the Aljezur GNR branch. He
told The Resident that he remembers officers
spending “day after day searching
the beach for the child”.
As with any other missing children
cases, the fi le on Renè was sent to the
Polícia Judiciária, said a GNR spokesman.
But the Lisbon headquarters of
the criminal police have no record of
Renè Hasèe.
“The missing people’s database in
digital format goes back to 1996,”, said the
spokesman. “The name is not registered
on the computer database and we have
not found it in the paper entries.”
However, the spokesman said
this does not mean the case is closed.
“Sometimes, a case has to wait years until
new information is found in connection
to it and it is possible this is one of
those cases,” said the spokesman.
Th e disappearance received no
publicity in the Algarve and only
limited media coverage at home
in Germany.
But, as the world focuses on
Madeleine McCann, we should also
spare a thought for one German couple
who even now, 12 years on, have
not given up hope of fi nding their son.

But MM isn’t in the news is she?
And frequently missing children’s remains are found far sooner than this.
————————————————–
Maybe her remains haven’t been found because she is still alive somewhere. Otherwise frequently maybe, but not as a general rule.
MM isn’t in the news? Well there is little new information and there hasn’t been for a very long time but at least once a week I spy her photo on some media publication and that includes the net. In fact nearly 15 months ago she disappeared without trace and very quickly any news of her per se dried up. If it were not for writing about her parents or imagining what her fate might have been, what would have kept her in the news?
In fairness the imaginings quickly became repetetive and boring and sometimes repulsive. Many people would have cried “enough” to these long ago. No imo what keeps Maddie out there is the interest generated by the parents, and sometimes this comes at a high cost and I am not talking about money here.
M and A
Elena, I do talk to various people of all ages and interest, and strangely they nearly all say when they see the McC parents annoyance or boredom sets in.The annoyance being the fact they were the people who allowed it all to occur, whatever it is, as there were no witnesses.
The Tapas 9 you recall were all at the Tapas bar at the approximate time of the possible ‘event’
Yes it is all at high cost, both emotionally and in loss of reputation for the parents, but this is a consequence of the choice they made that evening. And lets face it , it could have been worse, there were 3 children left alone.

maybe MM has been seen in ‘Old Bailey’ and ‘Newgate Street’ at the junction there?

jo - I have only just read this, and it came as a shock, as I had my own opinion as to what could have happened to Maddie (not the only one either). Why has it been kept hush hush, and not brought out into the open? Oh my, bad situation here. IMO.

Wouldn’t you agree this is so in a truly civilised and democratic society?

July 27th, 2008 at 11:02 am
The police are looking for missing children every day and Madeleine is one of them. The The Missing Persons Bureau is very busy always. Where do we begin to look for Maddie?
No one knows for sure what may have happened to her and so many people, etc. tramped through the apartment that vital signs probably were tampered with. Keeping a sharp eye open for missing kids is good. Most people are very aware more now, since Maddie went, and computer generated aging photos would be appreciated, so we have an idea what she may look like now.
July 27th, 2008 at 10:36 am
Most people on Anorak seem to be concerned with pursuing the parents rather than helping missing children in any way.
Although none of us knows what others do in their private lives.
That was rather my point.
I was ridiculed by M and A before last Monday for a refusal to come down totally on the side I thought more likely and for waiting for the Portuguese police investigation to pronounce. I was told I was incapable of debate because I kept an open mind.
Now it appears I’m ridiculed for saying my gut feeling seems to have been right, in view of last Monday’s announcement.
So who’s losing sight of what?! Certainly not me.
Mods and Admin
Maria, why wait until after last Monday to make your decision? gut feelings don’t change. the Pj continue to investigate , which is good news, but I am glad you have made a choice, albeit very late in the day. But if the PJ do uncover ‘damaging to the McC’ evidence, will you stay on that tigers back?
I can assure you that I do a great deal for missing children, and M is one of those.

Evening actually June. Wet stormy and cold.
If they are all so innocent then why do the McCanns and their friends tell lies.
Just to cover up the neglect angle? I think it’s gone way to far for that.
IMO they are so amateur and childlike with their stories and behavior they have to be hiding something else. Time will tell.
Awfully good to see ‘Maria?’ etc boiling over too. Thought the old girls would be cock a hoop about the shelving of the case. Seems they realise in their frustration that the battle is still on. Attack is the best defense so my Portugese chess tutor told me.
