Madeleine McCann: Colette Douglas Home Spreads The Fear And Inside Irvine Welsh
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann, Gerry McCann
THE HERALD: “Do you want to see every parent in the dock?”
It’s Colette Douglas Home, professional Maddie opinion giver. And to answer her question: yes. Fingerprint them, photograph them and question them for 42 days. Only the guilty have anything to fear.
Fear:
You’ve got to admit, they shouldn’t have left the children unattended and gone out to dinner.” It was a colleague talking to me about Kate and Gerry McCann. He went on: “We go on holiday with a big group of friends but we’d never do that. We put the wee ones to bed and eat downstairs.”
“And do you check on them every half hour?”
“Yes. Well, we send the teenagers to do the checking.”
Fear:
I wonder if he realises how fortunate he has been. If something terrible had happened, can you imagine the headlines? They would probably say something like: “Teenagers checked on missing toddler while parents partied.”
Yeah, who cares that the children have been eaten by alligators, fallen down the plughole or hit the minibar and suffocated in their own vomit – it’s the media’s reaction to it that matters most.
And what of the McCanns, Colette’s favourite subject:
I imagined the fact that Kate and Gerry McCann are doctors would stand them in some regard, since they spend their lives trying to help others. I was wrong. I thought the clear evidence from family photographs that Madeleine was a happy, well-cared-for child would demonstrate that leaving her unsupervised was an aberration, not the norm. But I didn’t allow for jealousy and resentment.
Maybe people are just bored of the McCanns? But Colette cannot face that possibility:
So let’s think about that call for prosecution. If the McCanns are to stand in the dock, who should stand beside them? We can start with those who were on the same holiday and who didn’t hire a babysitter. Then what about all the other couples who have stayed at that or any family-friendly holiday village where they felt safe enough to leave the children unattended while they ate? What about people who eat in the garden on hot summer evenings while their children sleep in the house? What about parents who sleep indoors, maybe one night a year, while their kids sleep in a tent? If we apply these standards, the courts would be jam-packed.
What about them? The McCanns are not being prosecuted child neglect, child abandonment, nor for any other crime.
THE SCOTSMAN: “Crime and Punishment - Irvine Welsh”
Dave Robinson is in Saughton jail. For crimes againt journalism. Ho-ho:
I’M WALKING behind the Famous Author. He’s wearing trainers, a T-shirt, an expensive-looking grey-green leather jacket and is carrying a plastic bag. As I follow him, I’m thinking that the way people walk tells you something about them. The Famous Author walks like a fighter: self-confident, disciplined, head up. He doesn’t walk like a 50-year-old, though in a couple of months he will be one.
How close behind Welsh is Robinson? Close enough to smell him?
Welsh has written a book called Crime, HMP Edinburgh. But he nearly didn’t:
He’s talked to child-abuse survivors’ groups and handles the subject with uncommon sensitivity – so much so, in fact, that he gave up writing the book altogether when the Madeleine McCann story first broke. “Even approaching the subject tangentially seemed frivolous and stupid.”
His is work of fiction, the McCann case is one of fact. What has one to do with the other? The McCann case is a touchstone for a writer’s book, a stepping stone on the PR drive.

Ah CoolandCalm thanks for confirming, I got that impression too.

You know what’s the worst sentence or even question to live with? “What if I hadn’t…”.
They, their friends and their family have to live with that question.
When I was 10 I had a dog who I loved very much. And he loved me too very very much. One night when my parents were out, the babysitter opened the door and let him out so the dog could get a walk in the park opposite of our house (unsupervised). When I discovered the dog was out I went out searching him and calling his name. He didn’t show up. Strange, he allways showed up when I called him. Next morning I heard he was hit by a car and died. After a couple of years I suddenly realised he died because when I called him, he was so eager to come to me that he ran in front of the car. Now who’s to blame:
a) the babysitter for being lazy and NOT walking the dog but throwing him out?
b) me for calling him without thinking of the traffic?
c) the driver of the car?
What if I hadn’t called him…
Sorry I have to leave, back to work now.

I have been laughing - at you! Trust me, when you shot yourself in the foot and then hung yourself, I had a grin from ear to ear. It was absolutely classic!
The other stuff which you have been posting is just boorish and devoid of any humour whatsoever.

m.e.
Apparently thinks she has the secret of the obvious truth.
perhaps in that little microcosm of the universe m.e. does hold such insulated and mighty power.
Not true here I’m afraid. We poor sinners are as much in the dark as anyone else.
Except the Moderators…who are the apostles of truth and light.
Moderators will moderate, whether they like you or or not I do not know.
…and frankly m.e. Dear, I don’t give a damn.

Stiggie, to be quite honest, I have no firm idea on their involvement or not.
My concern remains with Madeleine who was left alone. We’ve all agreed that this was totally wrong of them to do.
To offer them my sympathies and compassion because Madeleine is no longer around, is not part of my personality. I DO blame them for not doing their utmost to protect their children.
You cannot replace your children, and you need to protect those that you are given with the absolute utmost dedication. To say that you were comfortable with a situation in which you left three little ones alone, is unacceptable to me - no-one in their right minds should feel comfortable about leaving little ones alone under any circumstances!
And to regret what you did after the fact will never bring that child back!

Why dont you have a good laugh for a change? You too serious

What isn’t

If one believes they were not involved, then that means an abductor must have been. Surely accusations and curses should be directed at the abductor?
The only feelings that should be directed at the McCanns are those of sympathy and compassion, while saying to oneself - ‘there but for the grace of god go I’
July 29th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Julie, that isn’t strictly true

Like I said a couple of nights ago, when Murat was made an arguido, a lot of people thought he ‘did it’.
When the McCanns were made arguidos, a lot of people thought they ‘did it’.
______________________
I think a lot of the posters on here who are “anti” are not of the impression that they “did it”. They (like myself) point the fingers in their direction because they caused the circumstances which led to Madeleine disappearing. Whether she disappeared by accident or abduction, their initial actions still led to this.

Given enough rope - which you yourself kindly provided - you obligingly made a noose for yourself and hung yourself with it.
Hoisted by your own petard no less - and you are laughing at me?

You must have been the 4th supporter! A few were on the fence, but the vast majority were awful about him

Like I said a couple of nights ago, when Murat was made an arguido, a lot of people thought he ‘did it’.

All three arguidos aren’t arguidos any more. Which prooves it would have been best to wait for the police/AG/prosecutor/court to charge and convict anybody before making allegations about anybody’s guilt or innocence. And it would be even better if some people over here had learned NOT to believe the sensational stories in the papers, nor the spins of PR people or bloggers and posters. Better to trust the professionals who DO have access to wittness statements, DNA reports, fingerprint reports etc.
Looks like Maria is a very wise nun….
Nevertheless it was WRONG of all the holidaymakers who left their children unattended. Madeleine paid the price of her parents selfish decision. If people make (in hindsight) a wrong decision, the worst question to live with the rest of their live is : “What if I hadn’t….”.

I was in Court when the libel settlement statement was made, and there were a number of youngsters as well as older family members.
As I commented at the time, Justice Eady did them proud; wigged and gowned and looking like a proper Judge, as it were.
It can’t ever make up for the horror they were put through, but at least they could go back to their schools and colleges or whatever and throw it in the face of the people who had been tormenting them with the vile stories run in the newspapers.
And the adults will try and remake their lives as best as they can, without even the courtesy of a front page apology to match the front page accusations…
