Madeleine McCann: Colette Douglas Home Spreads The Fear And Inside Irvine Welsh
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann, Gerry McCann
THE HERALD: “Do you want to see every parent in the dock?”
It’s Colette Douglas Home, professional Maddie opinion giver. And to answer her question: yes. Fingerprint them, photograph them and question them for 42 days. Only the guilty have anything to fear.
Fear:
You’ve got to admit, they shouldn’t have left the children unattended and gone out to dinner.” It was a colleague talking to me about Kate and Gerry McCann. He went on: “We go on holiday with a big group of friends but we’d never do that. We put the wee ones to bed and eat downstairs.”
“And do you check on them every half hour?”
“Yes. Well, we send the teenagers to do the checking.”
Fear:
I wonder if he realises how fortunate he has been. If something terrible had happened, can you imagine the headlines? They would probably say something like: “Teenagers checked on missing toddler while parents partied.”
Yeah, who cares that the children have been eaten by alligators, fallen down the plughole or hit the minibar and suffocated in their own vomit – it’s the media’s reaction to it that matters most.
And what of the McCanns, Colette’s favourite subject:
I imagined the fact that Kate and Gerry McCann are doctors would stand them in some regard, since they spend their lives trying to help others. I was wrong. I thought the clear evidence from family photographs that Madeleine was a happy, well-cared-for child would demonstrate that leaving her unsupervised was an aberration, not the norm. But I didn’t allow for jealousy and resentment.
Maybe people are just bored of the McCanns? But Colette cannot face that possibility:
So let’s think about that call for prosecution. If the McCanns are to stand in the dock, who should stand beside them? We can start with those who were on the same holiday and who didn’t hire a babysitter. Then what about all the other couples who have stayed at that or any family-friendly holiday village where they felt safe enough to leave the children unattended while they ate? What about people who eat in the garden on hot summer evenings while their children sleep in the house? What about parents who sleep indoors, maybe one night a year, while their kids sleep in a tent? If we apply these standards, the courts would be jam-packed.
What about them? The McCanns are not being prosecuted child neglect, child abandonment, nor for any other crime.
THE SCOTSMAN: “Crime and Punishment - Irvine Welsh”
Dave Robinson is in Saughton jail. For crimes againt journalism. Ho-ho:
I’M WALKING behind the Famous Author. He’s wearing trainers, a T-shirt, an expensive-looking grey-green leather jacket and is carrying a plastic bag. As I follow him, I’m thinking that the way people walk tells you something about them. The Famous Author walks like a fighter: self-confident, disciplined, head up. He doesn’t walk like a 50-year-old, though in a couple of months he will be one.
How close behind Welsh is Robinson? Close enough to smell him?
Welsh has written a book called Crime, HMP Edinburgh. But he nearly didn’t:
He’s talked to child-abuse survivors’ groups and handles the subject with uncommon sensitivity – so much so, in fact, that he gave up writing the book altogether when the Madeleine McCann story first broke. “Even approaching the subject tangentially seemed frivolous and stupid.”
His is work of fiction, the McCann case is one of fact. What has one to do with the other? The McCann case is a touchstone for a writer’s book, a stepping stone on the PR drive.

Maria …… Then your words belie your measuredness!
Cheryl!!!! Have been doing that since the first morning they were on the TV!
I am an instinctual, touchy-feely person with severely impaired brain matter - and to be honest, it was Frilly Philly that put K and G in the frame for me. She kinda put a tin-hat on natural instinctual first thoughts that I was alreday having.
JT put cherries on top of a load of icing sugar that was on top of a cake full of ingredients that are still secret 14 months later.
I’m a Scorpio so I don’t do secrets very well. This is why I want Perestroika for the masses!

Elena! I am only trying to make light of an extremely difficult and sombre situation.
When the Human Consciousness ids disturbed to the extent that it has been in this absolutely unprecedented case - We have to assume that there is something not clicking into position or nobody would give a fuck and carry on with their lives as normal!
The very fact is - that ordinary men in the street are still giving this case their thoughts and judgements.
It’s an instinctual thing. If you haven’t got it, it’s difficult to explain.
However many people are going with their gut instict and ut does not sit well with what the Press are currently feeding us.
You should care what side I am on - and not be so dismissive.
I am on the side of right. I believe that the sword should fall on the side of justice.
Don’t dismiss millions of thoughts passing through millions of brains at this moment.
Freedom is becoming a privilege and not a human right. Listen up1

Coco, - don’t listen to the ‘voices’ in your head telling you something is not just right. Sit down in quiet, Coco, take a tablet and pen, and sit and write in any order all that is known about this case thus far. Leave out the crap speculated (freezer, etc. - that is not reality) Head one column say - For them Another column say -Against them - Another column - Evidence Another column - Reasons (i.e. what reasons to have caused their daughter harm) just write it all out and then sit and analyze - fairly…. Do not use the rumours unfounded written over the months on here - only what we actually know from the PJ, etc. Take your time, take days whatever … might help you, Coco.
So you are doing the dolls? Don’t forget to check the laws over there!

Well yes, I can see that point. Fair enough.

No Maria, never trust a blog for a translation, the professor translates the original legitimate source, not perfectly but enough to comprehend, that way you avoid being accused of interpreting your own view into the translation.

Any chance you could put that into Chinese?! I might then have the ghost of a chance of understanding it!
mccannfiles gives a better translation actually. Less amusing but vaguely comprehensible.

To make up for my disappointment at you choosing the Elena doll and not me, can I post the mccannfiles translation of yesterday’s lead/opinion article in the Expresso? It’s quite short.

Cheryl!!! I love you! Thanks for this.
I was concerned about the US market earlier. When Jo comes back I think we need a word with the Anorak bosses to see if we should do it off-site or split the profits.
To be honest - I think that all the dolls would make groovy key-fobs!
Key fobs! Who mentioned key-fobs?

You character, of course I like you, Coco, I sit over here in fits of laughter reading what you write at times!
Cheryl - you keep me sane and I realise that there are some lovely, sweet, kind and forgiving people left in the World when I read your posts too. And I mean that!
It’s just that I can’t stop the voices in my head that keep telling me that there’s something not at all right about any of this.
Thanks X
