ANORAK’S man at Birmingham City Council has been trying to access atheist websites. But he can’t.
Neither can he access sites that advocate witchcraft, the paranormal, “sexual deviancy” and criminal activity.
The authority’s Bluecoat Software computer system allows staff to look at websites relating to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism and other religions but blocks sites to do with “witchcraft or Satanism” and “occult practices, atheistic views, voodoo rituals or any other form of mysticism”.
Under the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003, it is unlawful to discriminate against workers because of their religion or belief, which includes atheism.

I work for B’ham council too, and I can still access atheist sites at work (I tested it as soon as I read this story) . I’d presumed it was because the software wasn’t implemented yet. However if your man can’t access them then I’ll be keeping a darn close eye on it for the next few days. This is disgraceful.

I don’t know why anyone would need to access a website about their religion while at work but if the mainstream religions are allowed then the others should be allowed too, as well as atheism.
