Madeleine McCann: Reading Amaral’s Book, Free Speech And Elvis
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann…
THE GUARDIAN: “On the front line in the search for Maddie - Gonçalo Amaral’s intriguing memoir of the Madeleine McCann case offers no solution but reveals a man obsessed by the investigation”
Ned Temko is reading Amaral’s book:
It is a shame that this revealing memoir from Gonçalo Amaral, the police chief who ran the Madeleine McCann investigation until he was unceremoniously fired last year, has not been published in English…
Indeed it is. And a disappointment that no British paper has sought to serialise the work. Aren’t we interested in what the copper thinks? Or are we too scared to publish it? What of free speech, then?
Wouldn’t any reader of sound mind dismiss slights against the McCanns’ involvement?
Within minutes of its appearance in Portuguese bookshops, the McCanns’ spokesman let it be known their lawyers would be giving it a thorough read, with an eye to the kind of libel action that ended up costing the Express group £500,000 earlier this year. And that was before the Portuguese authorities finally cleared the couple last month of any suspicion.
We’ve been scared off. But:
Surely it won’t be long before enterprising translators feed the juicier bits to an online conspiracy community that, in the 15 months since the cherubic three-year-old went missing from Praia da Luz, has elevated Madeleine into something close to a new Elvis.
Has she been seen in America?
Or in the phrase Amaral prefers to use, with no evident trace of irony, in the book’s acknowledgements: ‘cybernauts and bloggers who have been defending the cause of truth and justice.’
Or just proclaiming themselves “pro” or “anti” McCann, as if that helps:
Yet even for those of us who happen to believe that Elvis is no more, the book offers a page-turning compendium of unexplained puzzles - as are so frequently found in wide-ranging, complex investigations.

CATHERINE Mullany’s murder on the ‘paradise’ island of Antigua was awful and tragic.
Tick!
People like me who, until the expansion of package travel in the 1960s never saw further than perhaps Blackpool or Scarborough, now have the opportunity to visit supremely exotic destinations like Asia and Africa.
And..?
And it’s fantastic.
Phew! Go on…
It’s so easy to be lulled into a false sense of security when you are on holiday; the family of little Madeleine McCann know, only too painfully, about that.
Tick!
THE SUNDAY TIMES: “Big Yin on a voyage to explore big waste - Billy Connolly is recreating the Arctic journeys of two great pioneers for ITV”
ITV approached Connolly as part of its drive to get more factual “big access pieces” for the 8pm-9pm slots following on from the success of documentaries on JK Rowling and Madeleine McCann.
That’s entertainment (sha-la-la-la-la)…

Brandon, I’m not sure but I think the arguido status was lifted on July, 21st.
August 4th, 2008 at 12:40 am
Gonçalo Amaral believes that the publication of ” Maddie: The Truth of the Mentira” it will be able to contribute for the reopening of the process.

KATE McCann refused to answer 48 questions when probed by Portuguese cops over her missing daughter Madeleine, it was revealed yesterday.
The devastated mum replied to some at the start of the interview on September 7 last year.
But she exercised her rights and fell silent once she was made an “arguido” in the case, leaked police files show.
Two weeks ago Kate and her husband Gerry, both 40, of Rothley, Leics, were officially cleared of any involvement in Maddie’s disappearance.
Details of the Portuguese police probe are due to be opened to the public today.
Holiday
Maddie vanished in May 2007, days before her fourth birthday.
She had been left alone with her twin siblings at a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz.
Yesterday Portuguese newspaper Correio de Manhas said Kate was quizzed over why she said from the start Maddie had been abducted.
Cops also asked whe-ther she gave the children medication and if it was true that she sometimes despaired of their behaviour and had considered handing custody of Maddie to a relative.
McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said last night: “Kate was well within her rights not to answer if she didn’t want to.”

When I was at college 3 or 4 students had a bit too much to drink, went around the campus at 3 am letting off fireworks and generally messing about. Local plod were called, caught them and gave them a cell for the night.
Their smart alec law student friend found out about it and went round the nick. The desk sergeant was about to let the boisterous students go because they’d dried out and apologised and said they wouldn’t do it again.
Smart alec law student strides in and says: “You can’t hold my friends without charging them.”
So the desk sergeant charged them.
Cheryl, obviously your boys survived their teens but I wouldn’t say your advice fits every situation.
Yampster, funnily enough I have been interviewed by the CID, I answered each and every one of their questions, I was unconditionally released and later received a letter saying no further action would be taken. I think had I said nothing I would have looked guitly, whether I was or not is for me to know.

I don’t know why she wouldn’t answer 41 (if it was ever asked and if she didn’t answer). I would’ve thought a simple ‘No’ would cover it (but then maybe not).
I did have a friend who had twins for younger siblings (identical - boys) - and she always complained her mother lost interest in her - but her mother told my mother that they boys needed so much attention that she felt guilty about leaving S. to look after herself.

Hi Brandon
Re myths maybe? Who knows? Yeah I’m around now & it’ll be interesting to see what is said or…..not I fear, for a while at any rate. They need to evaluate & plan the next move. If they have any sense that is! If not then yes it will probably be a bumpy for them.

When we work, we all make mistakes. Take for instance a commercial manager. When we look at his/her performance, we’re adding up his/her failures and his/her successes. Sometimes for instance when a manager has lost his/her credibility or becomes controversial he/she has to go. NOT because of one particular incident, but because of a whole lot of things, some reasons are objective, others are subjective.
……………………………….
“It was only one particular incident, and I only mislaid one child by leaving her alone for hours in a foriegn country, I still have two more”
“Please say I can still be a professional child carer?”
Lol. What you been on Tokeje, must be good stuff. Score it off Maria? LOL

If you had ever been interviewed by the plod in this country or stood before a Judge or Coroner you would perhaps understand why the right of silence is (or was ) fundamental to the rights of everyone, not just in this country
__________
Yampster, one hard and fast rule I gave my boys when starting into their teens - you are not to talk to any policeman that stops you under any circumstances and starts asking you questions. You tell your name and at that point announce you have an attorney and will not speak to them until he is present and your mother. They carry at all times a business card of a lawyer friend of mine who reinforced that rule to them.
