I don’t think any ‘game’ is safe from hooliganism and violence nowadays. Well, bridge maybe?

Quite a nasty game it seems……
……….There has recently been a a worrying rise in ‘le bouliganisme’, when players have come to blows over a game.
Last year - the centenary of the sport - the authorities in south and central France were forced to clamp down on physical and verbal abuse said to be caused by prize money, alcohol and a rise in uncivil behaviour in France.
Club games were briefly banned in the Nièvre region in east-central France after a series of brawls involving players and fans.
This led le Midi Libre, a leading Mediterranean region newspaper, to pronounce pétanque ‘no longer a convivial sport’.
The French Pétanque Federation has advised players to drink in moderation.
