MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
NEW STRAITS TIMES: “Keep the candle lit”
Spotting our Maddy in Malaysia?
A YEAR after the abduction and murder of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, we must take pause to observe this sad anniversary in all sympathy for her bereaved family — as indeed for that of Sharlinie Nashar, lost in similar circumstances eight months ago and not yet found.
Other children go missing.
The contrasting fates of the children in these two cases raised the most awful conundrum: would it be kinder for such families to know their child is dead, to retrieve her remains for a proper burial in a consecrated grave where they might mourn and pray for her, or to never know what became of her, the better for hope to remain? Such unthinkable dilemmas are universal; the cases of Briton Madeleine McCann last year, American Jon- Benet Ramsey in 1996, and even the Azaria Chamberlain “dingo” case in Australia 28 years ago, all strike to the same depth of anguish.
Ramsey was fond dead 8 months after she went missing. Chamberlain’s body was never found.
The press sees Madeleine McCann buying party goods in Amsterdam…

Oh, and about the pajamas. CdM (along with several real newspapers : ) ) reported the pajamas as Amelie’s when the photo was released and calls them “similar” to those Madeleine was wearing when she disappeared. It has been a very long time, but I believe the photo itself may have been released over the PJ’s objections? Does anyone else remember that as being one of the moments when it became clear that there were fissures in the relationship between the family and the police?

Abraham Zapruder - Yes, what was all that about the tennis that afternoon, how Gerry had his third lesson of the day, how he warmed up but didn’t play (at 4.30?) because of a strained Achilles tendon or ankle or something, but he was playing at about 6 o’clock when he asked David Payne to pop in and see whether Kate was OK and whether she would be bringing the children to the tennis courts?
August 21st, 2008 at 5:42 pm
Pam, I’ve seen a timeline where it is said that by 7 ish the 4 Tapas men were playing social tennis, some of the women watching (but not kate who is at 5A), and at one point Gerry asks David Payne to go to 5A to check on Kate and see whether Maddy, Sean and Amelie want to come to watch the tennis. David payne does so, but the kids have had their baths so don’t go to the tennis.
From the marie nicholas post you get the impression that K&G were together with the kids 5 to 8.30.
As Columbo would say: “It’s probably not important.”

Good evening everyone.

The period 5.30 to 7.30 starts to become really interesting.
Did any independent witnesses see Gerry on the tennis court during that time I wonder? If so, why isn’t Gerry playing tennis mentioned in the Marie Nicholas post?

I saw the Panorama programme and I’m sure JT also contradicted herself in it. First of all she said she thought it was odd that Bundleman was wearing so many clothes because it was May and most people were in light clothing, then she said she thought it was odd that the child he was carrying had bare feet because it was cold. I seem to remember she said she was wearing a sweater, does anyone else remember that or am I imagining it? And if so, that might also contradict Russel’s statement that he saw a woman in a purple dress earlier in the evening, who he later discovered was JT.

Noooooo, had he been noting the group’s pattern, he might have escaped after leaving what he thought was a sufficient interval after Gerry’s departure, not KNOWING that the father had been stopped in the street by a chance encounter with his new friend.
For whomever asked about David Payne’s visit, I take this to have been Gerry’s reporting of his OWN whereabouts? Given that it is reported in the very first pages, (somewhere between pages 5 and 34), my assumption is that this is the first interview of the father in the immediate aftermath and in an attempt to establish the alibis of all relevant parties, so it seems pretty standard to me up until this point. Of course, I’m not a detective–I just watch them on TV. : )

One scenario that might fit is that someone was already in the apartment when Gerry
checked–a burglar, abductor, molestor, whatever–and panicked, fleeing with the child.

Right! He panicked, fled with the child, but then waited till Tanner, Jez and Gerry had assembled in the road and THEN he walked away.

He was indeed.
A million posters of The Artist Formerly Known as George Harrison speeding into the night, to be distributed into Iberia and North Africa, where M3’s agents were advancing across Morocco, squeezing their cuddlecats in times of stress…
One of the most amusing moments in the entire debacle…

Then the children went back to the Kid’s Club until 17.00, the time at which they had dinner in the bar, while their parents were watching them. Then they gave them a bath, and before they prepared them for the night, they left them play on a playground by the tennis court for a moment. The children were put to bed between 7.30 and 8 PM.

What happened to David Payne’s visit to the apartment? 6.40 wasn’t it? To ask if the McCann kids wanted to come to the tennis court?

Anyone who helps me with my “Truth Sticker Book” is a star. That is a book similar to the “Football Sticker Book” I had when I was a boy, collecting stickers of soccer stars. In my father’s day it was cigarette cards.
So when we learned the other day that the aeorobics instructress joined the Tapas table on 1st may, not the 3rd, that was another little “truth sticker” to go in my book!
Hopefully you and Enfants Kidnappés will help me complete my collection!!

Hmm! maybe we can put a chart on their fridge, and each time a truth comes out we could stick a gold star on it………..

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that the pajamas shown were said to be a matching pair, in a smaller size, belonging to Madeleine’s sister, no? Further, and contrary to a few posters who continue to insist that Ms. Tanner misidentified the color, the bottoms feature a white background, covered in a pink, floral print:

One scenario that might fit is that someone was already in the apartment when Gerry
checked–a burglar, abductor, molestor, whatever–and panicked, fleeing with the child. There could be many reasons: perhaps hoping for a ransom, perhaps to perpetrate or continue molestation, perhaps because he had injured or killed the child and was trying to obscure evidence or buy himself time to escape the area.

It must be noted that JANE, when she went to her own appartment to see her children, saw a person carrying a child in pyjamas, about 50 meters away, on the main road. She will be able to talk about it herself.

I wouldn’t dream of saying you were a liar or fantacist! I will definitely listen again. I think I saved the Panorama programme, actually.
Do you think she lied to protect Gerry, her partner Russell, both or herself? Or all of them?
Marie N
I agree that he would have to have been very quick to have got out of the flat that quickly. Isn’t that why GM thought he might have been hiding inside?
Do you think JT is telling the truth that she saw something?
Why do you think GM believes her even though he didn’t even see her (or the man) himself?
I’ll have to reread the files myself

Glad to hear you too have been focusing on the important question of the sketch.
It bears no resemblance to Tanner’s original description, but then Cooperman didn’t either, and JT rapidly convinced herself that Cooperman could well be the dastardly villain in question.
I blame it on the botox, myself…
