MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
NEW STRAITS TIMES: “Keep the candle lit”
Spotting our Maddy in Malaysia?
A YEAR after the abduction and murder of Nurin Jazlin Jazimin, we must take pause to observe this sad anniversary in all sympathy for her bereaved family — as indeed for that of Sharlinie Nashar, lost in similar circumstances eight months ago and not yet found.
Other children go missing.
The contrasting fates of the children in these two cases raised the most awful conundrum: would it be kinder for such families to know their child is dead, to retrieve her remains for a proper burial in a consecrated grave where they might mourn and pray for her, or to never know what became of her, the better for hope to remain? Such unthinkable dilemmas are universal; the cases of Briton Madeleine McCann last year, American Jon- Benet Ramsey in 1996, and even the Azaria Chamberlain “dingo” case in Australia 28 years ago, all strike to the same depth of anguish.
Ramsey was fond dead 8 months after she went missing. Chamberlain’s body was never found.
The press sees Madeleine McCann buying party goods in Amsterdam…

Hi, BH
Good to know you and the Mrs are still in great form; satirical websites need all the intelligent readers we can lay our hands on.
Sadly they can be a bit thin on the ground…

Maybe G and a friend went to dispose of something. The friend (wearing a wig) was seen by JT , but not by JW, as G was successfully distracting him.
Any comments?

Oh Chenier I’m sure it would become a collectors item.
Though I doubt if the designer got my permission.
Think I need Sue Sue and Suesomemore.
August 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm
Totje
You would need to consult the designer as to what it is in the range; I believe the Commentariat is focused on global domination of the markets, so the big question is ‘would it sell?’
August 21st, 2008 at 7:44 pm

I’ve seen people making remarks without knowing the full facts.
Not very nice of you.
Think that’s just the trouble with the wannabee detective brigade.

“Time for eats” as someone might say!
Well, time to cook them anyway..

Pam
Think JT was simply saying he wasn’t dressed as a typical tourist, which is obvious from the e-fit. You could be wearing shorts or crops but still slip on a sweater if it was chilly.
As to inconsistencies….I would expect them. It would be bizarre or suspicious if there weren’t any. I think we must assume the PJ investigated all this very thoroughly. They are experienced investigators (Rebelo came with the highest reputation) and unlikely to have missed anything we can spot!! I think we owe them that level of respect even if Amaral was felt by his superiors to be unsuitable to lead the case. He was removed! There was never any suggestion that Rebelo was anything less than professional, objective and thorough.
Equally, I think it’s a forlorn hope that any really likely leads as to Madeleine’s whereabouts, especially alive, were missed by the police. I can understand the parents hoping against hope, but it’s highly unlikely.
Still, eventually she may be found……….

Matt– Not the Eeyore jammies. THAT whole argument I’m quite sure I remember–even more than a year later! : o
Maria– On a cool, spring night at the beach I would be unlikely to wear a coat, but I wouldn’t be carrying my child through the night barefooted and in her pajamas. There is also a cultural thing that is certainly true between the US and Europe–I don’t know about the UK. I used to work often in Portugal, Italy, and Hungary, and I was always surprised to see people–especially men–wearing suede and leather jackets year-round. Here, the idea of a spring jacket or windbreaker pretty much died in the early sixties–excepting the extreme Northeast, where it can snow in August!
August 21st, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Nope, it’s me. Well, me or the police. In today’s EK translation to French it does seem to have Gerry reporting that he played with the kids between the courts and pool before bedtime–as another witness’s timeline says they had done every other day, but not on the day of the disappearance, because the children were already bathed and too tired.
While I try to be objective, I do sympathize with the McCann’s and assume this to be an unintentional blurring of the interview responses by the police or translator, but I’m sorry for having questioned you, AZ. I can see the discrepancy in the report.
August 21st, 2008 at 6:05 pm
AZ, I think what you are comparing are two completely separate things, but I understand why it is confusing. This week there have been several different timelines released, with two being a sort of “Usual Daily Routine” timeline and this one today which, without being intentionally perjorative, I will call “GM Alibi.” Was not the first one reported by one of the traveling companions and followed by detailed comments on how the day of Madeleine’s disappearance differed?
This isn’t meant as a challenge–it’s just the way I’ve read them, and I could as easily be mistaken.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:58 pm
The Telegraph….14th may 2007…
“”"That was terrible for them,” says John McCann, Mr McCann’s elder brother,
who also travelled to Portugal to help search for his niece. “Kate dressed Amelie
in her sister’s pyjamas and the baby said: ‘Maddy’s jammies. Where is Maddy?’
But she is too young to understand. And how do you explain? All we know is
that Madeleine needs her family. She loves us, we love her. It is time for her
to come home.”"”

AZ
Thank you!!

I do remember JT saying that she thought it odd that the child had nothing over her/its feet because it was cold. She thought the man wasn’t dressed like a tourist. Didn’t she say most tourists were wearing things like cropped trousers? I don’t remember exactly but definitely something like that.
August 21st, 2008 at 5:46 pm
AZ: Ah! I see what you mean. Sorry, I wasn’t following.
