Madeleine McCann: Looking For 1 Million, Raonaid Murray And Amaral’s Book
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
DAILY MIRROR (front page): “WE’VE SPENT £1M HUNTING FOR MADDIE.”
Kate and Gerry McCann Exclusive: We’ve spent £1m hunting Maddy - EXCLUSIVE McCanns vow to keep searching
THE SUN: “McCanns spend £1m on Maddie search” - Not exclusive.
THE MIRROR: “The couple have shielded the twins from what few facts are known about Madeleine’s disappearance in May last year.”
A few facts? There is only one fact: a child disappeared.
Gerry revealed: “They realise Madeleine is not here but they don’t know the details.”
What details?
DAILY MAIL: “Kate McCann: We’ve spent £1m trying to find Madeleine”
Speaking about their spending on the search for Madeleine, Kate said: ‘It’s a lot of money but we can’t set a limit. A child does not have a price. We will pay what we have to.”
A child might have a price. Isn’t that part of the fear?
DAILY EXPRESS: “KATE’S FURY AT DETECTIVE WHO PUBLISHED BOOK ON MADELEINE”
Fury. Always the fury.
KATE McCann has broken her dignified silence to attack the Portuguese detective who led the bungled hunt for Madeleine. She slated Goncalo Amaral for failing to find her little girl and for trying to cash in on the tragedy by writing a book
Tsk! Writing on the McCann saga for profit. The Express (10p cheaper than the Mail) is right to be outraged. What scum would do such a thing..?
As for Kate’s fury…
Says Kate McCann in Expresso, a Portuguese newspaper: “They could still have arrested us, couldn’t they? They could have stopped us from going home.”
Fury, indeed…
Says Gerry McCann: “I will be honest. We have got no idea whether Madeleine is alive or not. What we are certain of is that there is absolutely no evidence.”
Says Clarence Mitchell:
“Kate and Gerry have chosen to speak out to an element of the Portu¬guese media because they firmly believe that there may well be important information that somebody knows in Portugal. They will do everything they can to generate new leads.”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “’I cannot bring myself to walk down the road where she died’”
Just after midnight on September 4, 1999, Raonaid Murray was murdered savagely with a knife only 500 yards from her home in the south Dublin suburb of Glenageary.
Terrible. And Madeleine..?
Sean Hammond, a lecturer in forensic psychology at University College Cork, says high-profile murders can often have a profound impact on our behaviour and our feelings of safety. “They can leave an indelible mark. Even though the risks may be very low, people may no longer feel that it is safe to walk the streets at night. If you take a case like that of Madeleine McCann, people would have adjusted their behaviour towards their children as a result of that.”
Madeleine McCann: the benchmark of pain…

Don’t be too hasty re this.
Remember that interview was on May 4th 2007.
In that preliminary interview all of the Tapas Group were asked the same
introductory questions.
The excuses about the change of trousers and the change of sheets etc arose
later in the saga.

By the way, there is something a bit difficult to understand about his partner coming back 15 minutes after the dinner was over, it is in the French translation. (Sa compagne est venue le remplacer dans la chambre d’Emie environ 15 minutes après que le dîner soit fini).

Amaral answers :”if they admit Madeleine is dead then they cannot collect from a fund of more than a million pounds”
Any CLEARER anybody?
________
Good morning, Jo. Oh dear, you and your Sainted Amaral! One should be careful, Jo, who they place their unquestioning trust in …. what is that old saying ‘love many, trust few and always paddle your own canoe”!
So the sainted one says :”if they admit Madeleine is dead then they cannot collect from a fund of more than a million pounds”. Thus far, except for the time they had to pay their mortgage payment - and wasn’t that paid back in? - the money is being used to find their dearly loved missing daughter, as it was meant to be used. One would naturally think if their dearly loved daughter is found alive or her remains are found then they would no longer have need to use whatever was left in the fund. Certainly hope you didn’t take his statement as ‘pearls of wisdom’ that the rest of us hadn’t already figured out for ourselves, Jo.

Russell O’Brien begins his statement on May the 4rth 2007, at 9.45 PM.
Being British and not understanding Portuguese, written or spoken he is assisted in his statement by a translater under oath, Filipa M.
He completely confirms the statement of his partner Jane Tanner and by Rachel Mampilly, the mother in law. The present statement was collected by J.C, police imspector, who signed it.
As regards the trip, the group, and the habits of its members -children and grown ups- at the Ocean Club, the witness, who is a member of the group states that :
He is on holidays with his partner, and children Emma o’Brien aged 3 and Emie o’Brien aged one. He is a doctor. He is a colleague of Gerald (Gerry) McC with whom he directy worked for 6 months. His partner became pregnant roughly at the same time as Gerry’s wife. His daughter Emma’s and Madeleine Beth McCann’s ages are about one month apart.
Emma and Madeleine were in the same room, next to the reception area, at the KIDS CLUB . The persons in charge were someone called Cat, and another one called Emma.
Until yesterday, the 3rd od May 2007, to his knowledge, nothing suspicious or strange took place in the friends’ group or with the children. Everyone seemed normal to him, from the staff doing the cleaning, or the gardeners, to all the members of the staff in the whole complex. In Praia, he didn’t ever notice anything strange, or people who could have watched him in a strange way that could have arisen his suspicions.
Yesterday, since his daughter Emie didn’t feel well, the witness dropped Emma O’Brien at the KIDS CLUB only around 10.00 AM after having breakfast. He completely confirms Jane Tanner’s, his partner, statements about the rest of the day.
Around 7.15/ 7.30 PM, he went to his appartment, told stories to his daughters, including Emie who felt better. His partner Jane went to the “TAPAS” restaurant for dinner around 8.30 PM, while he went there around 8.45. When he got to the restaurant, almost all the grown ups were there without the children, with the exception of David, Fiona and Dianne. Thery arrived 5 minutes later, more or less.
They ordered the meal around 9 PM. As they were eating, it was normal for them that every 15 miutes, one person from every appartment went to check into the appartment, that the children were OK . Yesterday, since Emie wasn’t well, they reduced the interval between the checkings. He remembers Matthew Oldfield leaving the restaurant soon after 9.00 PM to check on his children. He isn’t sure about who left first five minutes later, Gerry or his own partner Jane, as they went out to check on their children almost simultaneously. He thinks Gerry went out first, since Jane saw him chatting with a person named Jez, on holidays in the complex. He thinks Jane only checked their own flat, as she worried about Emie. Then Gerry came back around 9. 25 9.30, and they began eating the starters.
Around 9.35/ 9.35, he took advantage of the time left before the next dish to leave the restaurant with Matthew Oldfield to go and check on his children. His daughter Emie was crying when he arrived. He stayed in the bedroom with her. He surmises Matthew went back to the restaurant 5 minutes after leaving him. HIs partner came to take his place in Emie’s bedroom about 15 minutes after dinner was over.
Around 9. 55 PM he went back to the restaurant where his plate had been waiting for him for 5 or 10 minutes. All the other grown-ups had finished eating. At about 10.00 PM,
Kate Healy left to go and check on her children in her appartement. Coming back, she went towards our table, screaming that Madeleine had disappeaed. We all ran outside and, with the help of a few people, we decided to look for her in the surroundings of the appartment blocks. The results of our search were negative.
After reading with the translater who explains it to him, he persists and signs.

Isn”t it sad that children today have to be made aware so soon in their young lives of
the dangers of trusting anyone. Just watched the video , don”t know who made it, but
interesting that the children themselves questioned the McCanns leaving their own
children on their own.

No it does not clueless, obviously even Stevie Wonder can see they will be looking in other directions, as the AG has cleared the former three arguidos of any involvement in any crime against Madeleine.

I know my kids benefited very much from practicing karate, both in terms of self-defense and in terms of self confidence and emotional control. I started at the ripe age of 40 or something and it was incredibly useful for me, too

I took my 6 year old to his “big” school this morning for their open day, to introduce them to the school and the teachers ready for their first day next year.
I had to go out to my car to get something (which was parked about 50 metres from the gate). On my way out there was a little girl (about 3 1/2) who was crying because she’d lost mommy. I gave her a big hug, took her hand (my own little one was holding my other hand), told her to come with me to fetch something from my car and then we’d find her mommy. She was quite happy to do so and the tears stopped immediately. No-one even questioned me … they just assumed it was my child.
It took about 15 minutes for me to find her mommy …. and when I gave the “wonder mom” a right blasting for leaving her little one alone she was ready to clip me around the earhole. As I was walking away, I turned back to her and said “I could have been an abductor ….. ” - I’ve never seen anyone’s gob shut so quickly!
Education has to start with the parents. In the times we live in, there are still far too many “comfortable parents” … your child can be gone in a split second!

Sorry to hear about your anterior cruciate ligament; karate is notoriously hard on its practioners.
The Offspring does one of the Taekwondo spin-offs; designed not to cripple the person practising the art. She loved it, still does so, and teaches it to kids whenever she gets a chance.
I’m surprised that more parents don’t take that route; it really isn’t good for people to live in a state of permanent incipient victim-hood.
Ratcheting up the levels of fear is extremely useful for pols, though…

Yes, I agree about the translation, best not to take too much notice. In fact we have
learned very little and will probably never know any more, I think the McCanns
ought to shut up now and get on with searching for Madeleine. There is a limit on
what the population will want to know.
