Madeleine McCann: Looking For 1 Million, Raonaid Murray And Amaral’s Book
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
DAILY MIRROR (front page): “WE’VE SPENT £1M HUNTING FOR MADDIE.”
Kate and Gerry McCann Exclusive: We’ve spent £1m hunting Maddy - EXCLUSIVE McCanns vow to keep searching
THE SUN: “McCanns spend £1m on Maddie search” - Not exclusive.
THE MIRROR: “The couple have shielded the twins from what few facts are known about Madeleine’s disappearance in May last year.”
A few facts? There is only one fact: a child disappeared.
Gerry revealed: “They realise Madeleine is not here but they don’t know the details.”
What details?
DAILY MAIL: “Kate McCann: We’ve spent £1m trying to find Madeleine”
Speaking about their spending on the search for Madeleine, Kate said: ‘It’s a lot of money but we can’t set a limit. A child does not have a price. We will pay what we have to.”
A child might have a price. Isn’t that part of the fear?
DAILY EXPRESS: “KATE’S FURY AT DETECTIVE WHO PUBLISHED BOOK ON MADELEINE”
Fury. Always the fury.
KATE McCann has broken her dignified silence to attack the Portuguese detective who led the bungled hunt for Madeleine. She slated Goncalo Amaral for failing to find her little girl and for trying to cash in on the tragedy by writing a book
Tsk! Writing on the McCann saga for profit. The Express (10p cheaper than the Mail) is right to be outraged. What scum would do such a thing..?
As for Kate’s fury…
Says Kate McCann in Expresso, a Portuguese newspaper: “They could still have arrested us, couldn’t they? They could have stopped us from going home.”
Fury, indeed…
Says Gerry McCann: “I will be honest. We have got no idea whether Madeleine is alive or not. What we are certain of is that there is absolutely no evidence.”
Says Clarence Mitchell:
“Kate and Gerry have chosen to speak out to an element of the Portu¬guese media because they firmly believe that there may well be important information that somebody knows in Portugal. They will do everything they can to generate new leads.”
IRISH INDEPENDENT: “’I cannot bring myself to walk down the road where she died’”
Just after midnight on September 4, 1999, Raonaid Murray was murdered savagely with a knife only 500 yards from her home in the south Dublin suburb of Glenageary.
Terrible. And Madeleine..?
Sean Hammond, a lecturer in forensic psychology at University College Cork, says high-profile murders can often have a profound impact on our behaviour and our feelings of safety. “They can leave an indelible mark. Even though the risks may be very low, people may no longer feel that it is safe to walk the streets at night. If you take a case like that of Madeleine McCann, people would have adjusted their behaviour towards their children as a result of that.”
Madeleine McCann: the benchmark of pain…

Val
In her interview on the Panorama programme, Jane Tanner herself said she was in her own flat when the balloon went up, there was a knock on her door and one of the other tapas women told her that Maddy had gone. She said that was the first she had heard of it, so obviously she can’t have heard Kate screaming earlier, and she (Tanner) can have been at the tapas table when Kate broke the news. The Panorama transcript is on the McCannFiles website.
This is from JT’s first statement to the PJ, recently translated here by Marie N, a slightly different story
@
15 to 20 minutes later, Matthew Oldfield and Russell O’Brien went out to see their children.. As their daughter Evie wasn’t well and cried, Russell staid in the bedroom. Matthew checked on the children, Gerald and Kate’s included. According to him, he saw the twins, but wasn’t successfull in seing Madeleine. But as he didn’t hear any noise, he thought everything was fine and went back to the restaurant. Matthew told JT that Russell stayed in the bedroom. She quickly ate the main course, and, worried, went into the bedroom so that her husband could eat in turn .
As she was in the bedroom, around 10, she heard Kate Healy and Fiona scream that Madeleine had disappeared. She doesn’t know if it was Kate who found out about the disappearance as she wasn’t in the restaurant then.

Russell and Jane are very quick eaters!
Till later!!

I think it would be more accurate to say that one former police officer, Amaral, believes these things.
*************************************************************************
Just for the record, the interviewer refers to the chief inspector in the case, Tavares de Almeida, writing a report which includes those accusations. Gerry replied “you will have to ask the police chiefs why they wrote that”.
I’m not well enough informed about the case to know whether Tavares de Almeida’s report was based on Amaral’s suspicions or not, but I accept that it may have been.

Hi there, how are you?
Do we know Tanner was still in the apartment? she may have gone back to the Tapas
Bar. 10pm, Kate discovers Madeleine missing, feels draught from open window yet
first runs to Tapas Bar to report M missing. Kate returns to apartment, stands on the
balcony screaming “they”ve taken her”, or words to that effect. Mrs Fenn says she
went out onto her balcony about 10.15pm and asks Kate if she should call the Police.
Kate replies, the Police have been called. Police state they received call at 10.33pm
and arrived 10.40pm. Question, why didn”t Gerry go back immediatley with Kate
and ask one of their Friends to ask OC to phone the Police? To me, it would seem the
natural thing to do as the child”s Father.

Even their boss.
September 6th, 2008 at 5:52 pm
Jo, did you like the bit in the interview where Kate says that as a professional and as a person Amaral’s behaviour has been a disgrace? And that his book must be nothing but a load of rubbish? (But they’re not thinking of suing him). And the way both McCanns just brush to one side anything inconvenient like sniffer dogs detecting blood and cadaver smells in their apartment and car only, or police officers saying their friends lied for them, that their daughter is dead and they were involved in her death and that they hid the body? They treat anything which reflects badly on them as completely irrelevant. If it were not so tragically real, it would make a great novel.

The McCanns have chosen to discuss these matters in public via the interview in the media.

They are aged three and a half, and they are very, very happy.
Q – Did you explain to the twins what happened to their sister?
Kate – They perceive Madeleine’s absence perfectly. I have no doubt whatsoever. But they don’t know the details. They know that she disappeared and that we’re looking for her

They ordered the meal around 9 PM. As they were eating, it was normal for them that every 15 miutes, one person from every appartment went to check into the appartment, that the children were OK . Yesterday, since Emie wasn’t well, they reduced the interval between the checkings. He remembers Matthew Oldfield leaving the restaurant soon after 9.00 PM to check on his children. He isn’t sure about who left first five minutes later, Gerry or his own partner Jane, as they went out to check on their children almost simultaneously. He thinks Gerry went out first, since Jane saw him chatting with a person named Jez, on holidays in the complex. He thinks Jane only checked their own flat, as she worried about Emie. Then Gerry came back around 9. 25 9.30, and they began eating the starters.
@
This seems to say that the couples checked only on their own children. What happened to the bit about Oldfield listening outside all the flats and seeing all the shutters down?
Who came back first, Gerry or Jane?

Thus far, except for the time they had to pay their mortgage payment - and wasn’t that paid back in? - the money is being used to find their dearly loved missing daughter, as it was meant to be used.
***************************************************************************
There’s a bit of a mystery about the million pounds which has been spent on trying to find Madeleine, as British TV this morning said most of it had been paid to ‘a Spanish detective agency’. Presuming this is Metodo 3, they were recently reported as saying that they received nothing like the amount they were claimed to have received. I believe the amounts they referred to were 60,000 euros for six months work and 48,000 euros expenses. Yet another contradiction in this case! But surely either the fund can prove it made the payments, or Metodo 3 could prove which payments they received.
_________
Yes, I saw that written before and somewhat puzzled me. I know the pound has taken a hit and Euro is stronger right now, is that correct? So, talking euros and pounds what would that be translated into in amounts of money paid them back then, presuming the pound was stronger then? Granted there has been a lot of inconsistencies in various areas but one would think to not tell the truth about monies spent would not be too difficult to find out. Is there a law that requires them to make an accounting or have the financial statements audited? Or is the Fund a private one which might not be governed by such laws?
We are always having scandals over here with fudging of figures by big corporations and on the other hand there are scandals of finding out that money being received in was ‘diverted’ by someone dishonest in the accounting office and put in their own pockets and never show up in the books as having been received.
September 6th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
Marie Nicholas, thanks as always for the translation. Here’s an interesting exercise, put yourself in Kate’s position during this sequence (from Marie’s translation of ROB’s statement, my comments in capitals):
@
Around 9.35/ 9.35, he took advantage of the time left before the next dish to leave the restaurant with Matthew Oldfield to go and check on his children. His daughter Emie was crying when he arrived.
SO BY THIS POINT KATE IS AT THE TABLE AND SHE SEES MATT AND RUSSELL LEAVE.
He stayed in the bedroom with her. He surmises Matthew went back to the restaurant 5 minutes after leaving him. HIs partner came to take his place in Emie’s bedroom about 15 minutes after dinner was over.
SO BY THIS POINT KATE HAS SEEN TANNER LEAVE AND MATT COME BACK.
Around 9. 55 PM he went back to the restaurant where his plate had been waiting for him for 5 or 10 minutes.
SO BY THIS POINT TANNER IS STILL AWAY AND RUSSELL HAS COME BACK.
All the other grown-ups had finished eating. At about 10.00 PM,
Kate Healy left to go and check on her children in her appartement. Coming back, she went towards our table, screaming that Madeleine had disappeaed. We all ran outside and, with the help of a few people, we decided to look for her in the surroundings of the appartment blocks. The results of our search were negative.
WHERE DID KATE THINK TANNER WAS?????????
If Tanner was in 5D, why didn’t Kate go to her first? Why didn’t Tanner hear Kate screaming?

Why doesn”t someone question the veracity of the Mirror reporting?
In the mccannfiles.co.uk under “Fund” it states £300,000 of the initial donations
was spent in the first few months in setting up the Fund, Company incorporation,
McGuiness expenses, McCann expenses etc.
Esther McVey stated the mortgage payments were not admissable, neither were
legal expenses, I think in Gerry”s blog in December he re-affirms they will not use
the fund. How come Kate is now saying part of the £1,000,000 includes Legal Fees
when a seperate fund was supposedly set up with Richard Branson”s £100,000,plus
any other high profile backers . Where is the Fraud squad.???????

[...] Follow the money. This is beginning to stink very badly. Did not Clarrie specifically deny the £1m, and was not the monthly retainer to be paid by someone else anyway.
[...] “The two doctors, from Rothley, Leics, revealed that in just 10 months the Find Madeleine fund has paid £1million to Spain’s Metodo 3 detective agency to search for her.”
That is £100,000 per month. Many times greater than what their beloved pink spokes-thing urged us to believe some time ago.
No wonder he has absented himself.
******
Goodday, PeterMac. Even if the article is NOT accurate - which wouldn’t come as a big surprise - the amount of GBP 1 million is quoted everywhere, so must be correct. So if it would refer to BOTH M3 and Oakley, knowing that the latter got GBP 600,000, M3 would have had GBP 400,000, which is still not remotely near the money M3 quoted themselves…
And … it still doesn’t explain where the REST OF THE MONEY has gone ! It’s an educated guess that the Fund must have gathered a minimum of GBP 1,55 million, probably close to GBP 2 million taking merchandise into account. It’s not possible to estimate how much was deposited in cash or cheques “simply in an envelop to Rothley” IMO & allegedly.
