Well, JK Rowling has just donated a million to NuLab, so that should tide them over for a while.

But Saul is perfectly correct in noting that the population perceives the Tories as the money market types, even when they are not.

And since image, helped along by all of that wonderful spin, is what seems to count for most people, image is what they get.

But let me say once more that we can thank the Goddess that our Tone had gone before the disaster waiting to happen became the disaster which is happening. He would have been shoulder to shoulder to George on the White House Step at 7.30 am, eastern time, vowing to pledge every penny we've got to prop up Wall Street...

The biggest problem for Osborne, is slagging off all the money men. Joe Public knows the city is hardly awash with Labour voters. Like it or not the financial market will always be associated with the Conservative party.

Saul

It certainly has not been a good time for Osborne; this sort of crisis should be a brilliant opportunity to depict NuLab as idiots for falling for the whole confidence trick of 'Give us lots of money and we will make your fortune'.

Instead it's coming across as the Tories being out of their depth.

Who'd a thunk it?

And Jack,

I'm fairly sure that most, if not all, States prohibit people marrying moose.

Even if they think it will win an election for the moose marrier; all may be fair in love and war, but the best laid plans of men and moose oft go astray.

Besides, surely Bristol doesn't want to marry someone that old...

'article about McCain pushing for the shotgun wedding before polling day?'

Yes, Chenier, the poor girl's strife seems far from over.

To repeat myself a bit, I think it would be funny if McCain forgot who he was and tried to marry a moose on November 4th. In 20 years he'll say in an interview: "Sarah Palin shot my bride on our wedding day and all I got was this lousy private retirement home package."

George Osborne, "Tim nice but Dim", this is manna from heaven for Gordon Brown. I expect the opinion polls to show a renewed confidence for Brown in this crisis.

Saul,

It looked like passing till almost the end; I think you are probably right that some of the pols voted against, thinking it would pass anyway.

Certainly McCain last week seemed to be doing his best to push the Democrats into being the party to support it; he left Washington once it became clear that our Nancy wasn't falling for it. But if he had ever given any thought to what was right he certainly showed no sign of it at the time.

And Jack

Have you seen the article about McCain pushing for the shotgun wedding before polling day?
Of course, you can't rely on a catastrophe every day to cover the campaign trail, so a whole week of media coverage of the wedding preparations would be an excellent diversion...

I'm not sure that either of them would have any real power to act at the moment.

Both are at the mercy of forces they cannot control, and both have historical ties to the conviction that the financial markets were wealth creators.

And it's looking more and more like the biggest Ponzie fraud of all time...

I think todays vote spoke volumes about the morals of elected politicians. My impression was that a lot of them held back to see which way the vote was going before they made their vote, and got it horribly wrong.

People have been shot for puns that bad, usually by Dick Cheney, but it is good to see that the ongoing crisis isn't terrifying us into acclaiming our Gordie as Prime Minister for Life.
