That piece is a corker. I haven’t enjoyed a film of his since Sleeper, but I love that routine. He cut part of it for TV. When he mentions the laws in New York State the second time; with the couple on his bonnet, he stresses ‘especially Saturday’. Which won’t have made it funnier for you both, but added to my enjoyment. His timing, delivery and pace were all better than workmanlike, and the material there is quite surreal for Allen. Perhaps that’s why I liked it.

I don’t know of many comics I utterly dislike – most have some qualities I admire or enjoy. Only Ricky Gervais springs to mind. I’d rather put wasps in my ears than listen his stuff.
