Yes, the few of "this happy breed" who chipped in pointed that out. There were many moderate comments too, but even they referred to the Times as a liberal newspaper, the EU as a socialist entity and America as 'the world's policeman'...and they've nearly all got guns. There was talk of people 'stocking up' with supplies too. The bankers may have gotten us into this, but I'm going to cheer them on if the alternative is the USS Roanld Reagan coming to steal our lighthouses...

I'm sure there was an American statesman who warned against the US becoming the world's poiliceman a couple of hundred years ago in some speech or treatise...I'm damned if I can find it though. :(

I'm always suspicious about people who claim not to care what a newspaper says by writing to the newspaper to tell it they don't care what the newspaper says...

After all, why are they reading it in the first place?

Ignore me. I read way too much science fiction. The Atlanteans may yet save us. If we can only stop dumping all our crap on their homes. Or they'll enslave us.

Either way I get to see hand-held energy weapons used.

Oh, I wasn't joking, chenier. I'm just hoping a ragtag confederation won't have access to the 'football' any more. We can look forward to neo-feudalism over here ( not admittedly a welcome thought) if there aren't going to be any boom-tipped fireworks coming our way from across the pond. I asked becasue I read about 450 comments from mostly US citizens after a piece on Sarah Palin in the Times. A lot of the more 'conservative' comments - and most were - stated that they didn't care what the rest of the world though about their elections. Come secession/balkanisation, they won't care what folks in the next town think either.

Just planning for the future...

Magnetite

Do not jest.

With a country packed with legislators convinced that tax breaks will have the money markets back on their feet in no time, secession is certainly going to look good to some of the loonies. If it weren't for Sarah Alaska would probably be first in the queue...

And the EU may be destroyed by this...

Jack, the punchline is that they are throwing more and more ideas out in the hope that one of them, no matter how ludicrous, will persuade people that there is a bottom in sight.

A financial bottom, I mean.

At the moment Hank Paulson would get on Air Force 1 and do a whistle-stop tour mooning every country on the planet if someone said they thought it might work...

I wonder which US state will be the first to secede from the Union, marking the beginning of the balkanisation of the US? Provided we don't manage to pull back from disaster this time? It's not as if we can have another war (a la FDR and Winnie) - there's no-one left to fight with...

And here's the punchline:

"The Fed doesn't believe it has the legal mandate to make unsecured loans, so it would need the Treasury to guarantee any losses."

"an extreme step that could allow it to directly purchase commercial paper" (MarketWatch.com)

While I appreciate the value of the humble old piece of paper, aren't there more important things to worry about? Like whether Sarah Palin's hotness will melt the polar icecaps within four years?

OK, I was initially unsure about providing alcohol to a dog, but then I realised PETA would have a fit, and any day when PETA has a fit is a good day, so your plan seems pretty solid.

Did you hear the one about the Fed buying vast amounts of unsecured short-term debts?

I don't know if I've ever banted before, at least not in polite company.

Erm OK...

Sell big...buy small arms...get into the business of coup attempts against small oil-rich states....have a pint down the pup at the end of the day. Rinse and repeat.
