Madeleine McCann: An Apology For Journalism, Desmond’s Reputation And Greenslade Scores
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann and Gerry McCann
DAILY STAR: “’THE TAPAS SEVEN‘” - AN APOLOGY
The Sangria Seven, surely. Or the Tapas 9 (what happened to them?). But what of this latest apology? Ahem..:
In articles published in September and November last year we suggested that the holiday companions of Kate and Gerry McCann might have covered up the true facts concerning Madeleine McCann’s disappearance and/or misled the authorities investigating her disappearance.
Yes…
We also suggested that the McCanns’ friends had been identified as potential suspects.
And…
We now accept that these suggestions should never have been made and were completely untrue.
The Star is printed in Portuguese…
We apologise to Jane Tanner, Russell O’Brien, Fiona Payne, David Payne, Matthew Oldfield, Rachael Oldfield and Diane Webster to whom we have agreed to pay substantial damages which they will be donating to the Find Madeleine Fund.
Ah, yes, another donation. Well, at least the cash will keep the story going;, and the Express in news, and robots…
TIMES: “Express group to pay McCann friends damages”
How much?
Friends of Madeleine McCann’s parents are expected to accept libel damages of £375,000 today.
Express Newspapers has previously paid damages of £550,000 to Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire. The group and other newspapers also paid more than £600,000 to Robert Murat, a former official suspect, and two other people.
Anorak broke that story. And what of the “other newspapers”, like the Times’ sister organs, the Sun and the News of the World. Why not mention them by name?
THE GUARDIAN: “Desmond’s papers back in court to apologise for more shoddy journalism”
It’s Roy Greenslade, fearless repeorting on bad jouslism. No, not the Maddy keywords. No, not the BNP adverts. The Express:
It is a further nail in the coffin of the reputation of the Daily Express and its pornographer owner, Richard Desmond.
Reputation? Does he care? And what fot Desmond’s newspapers? They might be full of bollocks, but people still read them, or at least they look at the pictures:
Guardian circulation: 348,878
Daily Express circualtion: 739,025
Daily Star circulation: 731,433
And you thought no-one read the Express…
Madeleine McCann: A child is missing, still missing. After a year and half of reporting, there are no suspects. The press has uncovered not a single lead. And the parents continue to search for their daughter…

Hello again, is it normal for guilty people to receive libel damages and a public retraction, I think not.

Hello again, is it normal for guilty people to receive libel damages and a public retraction, I think not. We in Germany remember the case of Rene Hasee, the little boy his case much like that of Madeleine’s, many are convinced the guilty party resides in Portugal, but the Portuguese did nothing to find that party, or perhaps that is not correct, could it be they know but the party was and is untouchable, even to the disappearance of children.

Can’t hang around at the moment but ………………… ‘Tis an ill wind that be a blowin’.
The Clannies don’t half scrub up well - don’t they. Even JT looked as if she had made an effort this morning.
Nice to see that they are all still so close. Sometimes - people grow apart and fall out or get divorced because they cannot cope with such horrendous trauma - but these look like a really cohesive and supportive group.
I think that they should be commended for donating the money to the Fund. Jolly good show!
I would take my hat off to them - but there’s still something niggling at me - I can’t think why - but there’s something not quite right. I can”t quite put my finger on it. Amaral would understand what I mean.

You are correct, you have 375,000 reasons to wriggle and squirm, not to mention how public the “settlement” was, and you cannot find the time to pass a thought for Madeleine, time only for your absurd and malicious twitterings.
October 16th, 2008 at 4:29 pm
If anyone is revelling in the tragedy it’s the people who do absolutely nothing in trying to find out what happened to her - these are the people that lead sad existences because they’d rather turn away and not get involved. I bet these are the sort of people that would walk away if an old man was getting beaten up or an old lady had her handbag stolen from some chav. Well all I know is i’m glad I’m not one of them……

In articles published between July and December last year we suggested that the holiday companions of Kate and Gerry McCann might have covered up the true facts concerning Madeleine McCann’s disappearance and/or misled the authorities investigating her disappearance.
We also reported speculation that one member of the group, Dr Russell O’Brien, was suspected of involvement with Madeleine’s abduction.
We now accept that these suggestions should never have been made and were completely untrue.
We apologise to Jane Tanner, Russell O’Brien, Fiona Payne, David Payne, Matthew Oldfield, Rachael Oldfield and Diane Webster to whom we have agreed to pay substantial damages which they will be donating to the Find Madeleine Fund.

Twittering bird brain, your skills appear to be that of a gossip monger, reveling in the tragedy of Madeleine McCann and that of her parents, who will be your next unfortunate target for surely that is your forte in life to feed from the grief of others, such a sad existence you lead, no doubt Garth will be along to cheer you up.
October 16th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Rasputin,
Could you point me to the full text of the libel statement?
I don’t think I can face trawling through the Express, etc…
October 16th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
no I don’t mean that mr twist you said that not me. That’s why you’re such an embarrasment you haven’t got the skills pal….
October 16th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
What, you mean making unfounded allegations is trying to work things out, typical bird brain twitterings.
October 16th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Well at least most people on here have tried their hardest to work out exactly what has happened rather than just sit there and critcise which is all you ever do isn’t it. I don’t think anyone is embarrassed by their work even if they get to be proved wrong because they can get some satisfaction out of teh fact that they tired whereas you, well you are just an embarrassement full stop..
