Madeleine McCann: McCanns Admit, Liverpool Echo Wins And A Missing Child
MADDIE WATCH - Anorak’s at-a-glance guide to press coverage of Madeleine McCann
DAILY EXPRESS (front page): “MADELEINE – McCANNS: OUR MISTAKE”
The paper says that Kate and Gerry McCann admit being wrong in leaving Madeleine in their holiday apartment.
THE SUN: Leaks, smears … now plane lies”
MADELEINE McCann’s parents yesterday blasted claims they and the Tapas Seven had demanded a private jet and five-star hotels to return to Portugal.
So the Mail on Sunday was wrong?
McCanns’ spokesman Clarence Mitchell angrily denied the paper’s report. He said: “No such demands have been made. All talk of private jets and five-star hotels is complete rubbish.”
DAILY MAIL: “Portuguese police leaks are ’shameless smears’ to discredit us, say McCanns”
Police in Portugal supposedly operate in total secrecy and officers, suspects and even witnesses face jail if they speak out about ongoing investigations. But behind the scenes, officers have briefed selected journalists with a series of sensationalised claims about the 11-month hunt for Madeleine.
The McCanns have endured wild allegations that they could have drugged their children or even dumped Madeleine’s body during a publicity visit to Spain. But they are especially furious about the timing of the latest leak, which derailed a planned trip to the European Parliament to call for an improved alert system for missing children.
DAILY MIRROR (front page): “THE GLOVES ARE OFF.”
“Kate and Gerry McCann’s fury over ‘blatant’ Portuguese police leaks”
Madeleine was crying.
Says Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns’ spokesman:
“Their awareness had risen but their system failed. They were incredibly unlucky but they made a mistake. There is no getting away from it.
“Nobody, but nobody, regrets it more than they do. And if, God forbid, Madeleine is never found they will have to live with it for the rest of their lives. But, let us not forget, the person who is really responsible is the person who took Madeleine.”
The McCanns are good parents:
Says Mitchell: “This is a blatant and timed attempt against Kate and Gerry to try to divert attention onto negative headlines questioning their suitability as parents.
DAILY STAR (front page): “MADDIE’S PARENTS CLEARED IN DAYS.”
Maybe. Well, there is no case againt them.
THE INDEPENDENT: “McCanns demand inquiry over leak”
In the early stages of the Madeleine inquiry, Portuguese police frequently cited their secrecy of justice laws to explain why they could not answer journalists’ questions.
But Portuguese newspapers printed a series of articles, quoting anonymous “police sources”, that shed light on how the case was developing.
The stories often proved to be accurate, and respected Portuguese reporters confirmed that senior detectives were leaking information to them
DAILY TELEGRAPH: “McCanns may refuse to attend reconstruction”
Those leaked police reports:
Says their spokesman Clarence Mitchell: “It’s a blatant attempt to question their suitability as parents. We’re not happy — the gloves are off now.”
LIVERPOOL ECHO: “Your ECHO wins a hat-trick of media awards”
Chief feature writer Paddy Shennan was named Feature Writer of the Year at the O2 Media Awards for Cheshire and Merseyside.
Paddy’s entry included a touching interview with Madeleine McCann’s grandparents.
Newspapers can be winners with the McCanns. And Losers.

that is a well thought out and written comment. Having read some of the previous entries, it’s unlikely that Ian would respond. He dictates rather than debates.
Coming back?

The reason probably for - no arrests and no Madeleine is that all was cut and dry before the PJ were notified. Very hard to track down after the event and when everything may have been cleared away. 45 minutes is a long time to wait before ringing the PJ!!!

Robert Murat is now suing newspapers! Why does he not start firstly by suing the McCanns-very interesting he has not mentioned them. A child of 3/4 does not lie. That is obviously a lie that she said what she did at the breakfast table (if the was there). A child would not remember the night before, as other posters have pointed out. When all said and done Madeleine was used to crying and calling out for, as reported “Daddy”.IMHO!

“Interestingly Clarence (who has sunk to a new low by his accusing Madeleine, by implication, of lying about crying)
You know he need not necessarily have been lying. Children of 3-4, while they may have well developed verbal skills, often have difficulty differentiating days weeks and months. In other words last night could very well have been the previous night ,or two nights previous etc., or in fact as Clarence said , it could have been a dream or merely imagination , which also is quite well developed at that age. At 3-4 this isn’t unusual. The point is, the child was happy to reprimand her parents and toddle off happily, when she felt her job was done. This is actually an indication that she felt comfortable and secure with her parents and a sign that they were doing something right. Don’t get me wrong, I am not for one minute saying that leaving her that night was right, what I am saying is that the above and indeed other signs point to otherwise good parenting . There is no evidence to suggest otherwise. Now will you dismiss colourfully and without thought ? No matter to me. I was only passing through and now I have to go.

Josephine.
Regarding Tanner.
My own recollection is that Tanner said she had seen someone but ‘carrying something’ which could have been a child and it was as she was going to the Tapas Bar.
It was with some surprise that I watched the Panorama interview where it had changed to going to the apartment and she could see it was Madeleine.
If she altered it back then she is simply re-stating the ’secret’ interview with the police.
Interestingly Clarence (who has sunk to a new low by his accusing Madeleine, by implication, of lying about crying) claims that the other T9 members statements had been leaked - which they do not appear to have been (maybe he was making that as a suggestion to them?).
Apart from it being irrelevant who leaked the awful depths of neglect which had only been surmised by most of us before, it is worth remembering that it was a pro-McCann leaning ‘journalist’ who told the TV and chose the time to tell them! Note how carefully that release was aimed, AFTER the ‘triumph’ in Belgium (which I have read described as ‘Guy Fawkes selling smoke alarms!).

70 Mel,
“time is running out to charge the arguidos”
If an investigation takes very long and needs time to collect facts, a judge will always
give more time to the police.
you can not compare solving a crime to a quizz on television when you have ten seconds to tell the name of Napoleon’s wife.

114, Indiansummer,
where did you get this story?
April 13th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
116 Puzzled,
The PJ are not lying at all. The PJ are not saying anything.
They still have to analize everything they have heard from the witnesses. Compare everything to find out if there are new contadictions. Compare them to the old contradictions.
And than send the results to the Public Prosecuter.
This will be a horrible amount of work.
They will transcript every recorded word on paper. Check on every written word if they wrote the text correctly.
They will have to make a repport about every day they spent in England.
April 13th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
Not entirely sure how you find out whether or not Murat is a “dodgy-eyed weirdo”…
April 13th, 2008 at 11:51 am
Yes they all lied.
But now spanish and portuguese news say that tanner has come clean, hence the cops rushing back to portugal cos that have got what they came for.
British press claim that the Mcconns will soon be cleared cos they went back non the wiser and dont have a clue. (probaly written by someone comical). Anyway who is lying now?
The British press
The PJ
The portuguese press
The Mccons
Clarence the clown

Madeleine suspect to sue media
Robert Murat denies any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance
A suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is to sue 11 leading British newspapers and one TV station over allegedly libellous stories.
London-based law firm Simons Muirhead & Burton said it was representing Robert Murat against Sky, the Sun and others.
The 34-year-old Briton, who lives near the Algarve holiday apartment from where Madeleine went missing, denies any involvement in her disappearance.
Reports suggest the action could lead to a record payout of more than £2m.
Villa searched
In a statement, the solicitors, who are specialists in media litigation, said they were taking action against Sky, the Sun, the Daily Express, the Sunday Express, the Daily Star and the Daily Mail.
They also listed the Evening Standard, the Metro, the Daily Mirror, the Sunday Mirror, the News of the World and the Scotsman.

Media lawyer Caroline Kean of media law specialists Wiggin told the Observer newspaper that if Mr Murat successfully argued the papers inferred he was involved in Madeleine’s abduction or murder, he could win a record payout.
“You could expect £200,000 per paper, per claim, and that would clear £2m,” she told the paper.
Joshua Rosenberg, legal editor of the Daily Telegraph, which is not being sued, told the BBC the papers will try to prove that what they printed was true.
“The newspapers will now be making their own investigations to see if they can find more information about Mr Murat in order to justify the allegations they printed,” he said.
“So they may well be digging around in Portugal to see what they can find out.”
Curtesy of the beeb…..
So the papers are now dong some investigative jurnalism…..figures..

Among memory loss and changes in testimony
Since coming to British soil, Paulo Rebelo remained exactly the same attitude towards journalists who had been in Portugal: as soon as the topic of conversation concerned the case McC., was silence. On leaving the premises of the British police, after interrogation, the silence of the inspector, even with the Portuguese journalists, was betrayed by a slight smile. Those who are familiar with the inspector by other cases, we know that this can only mean one thing: air to move as they please.
And we have come to understand the smile of the inspector. According to several British officers of the Leicestershire police, the case of kidnapping and cohesiveness of the group known as Lids 9 (including K. and G. McC.) begin to crumble.
“If there was a pact of silence has been broken and I am sure that my colleagues will come to solve Portuguese,” said an official of the British police in Enderby.
According to the same source, the testimony of Tanner and Jane Russell O’Brien, which directly involves G. and K. McC., enabled researchers to understand why the mother Madeleine® had refused to answer many questions. In September, the day he was nominated arguida before leaving the partner for the United Kingdom, K. had refused to cooperate with the Judicial Police, including the refusal to explain why he had changed his clothes or why Madeleine® since they arrived at the Ocean Club, cried often when he stayed with his mother, but never cried with G..

Im sure the police have already asked those questions.
And now!! all you have been waiting for,in regarding the Tapas interviews, NOTHING!!! Knew it!

Have the McCann ever answered this question:
Did they leave their children alone on holiday on the nights prior to the abduction?
If so, what were the timings?
A couple that had a pattern of leaving their children alone would make an enticing target for an observant predator.

April 12th, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Well, I always suspected it, this is what she originally said. I guess its fact. Should get interesting on Monday.
Jane Tanner’s declarations to the Police casts doubt on the McCanns
Key witness that claimed the kidnapping backtracks
The Portuguese police still believe that Gerry and Kate are connected to the disappearance of the daughter. This conviction was strengthened with the visit to England. A couple’s friend also helped
The thesis of the eventual abduction of Madeleine McCann was compromised by the interrogatories made this week in Leicester, England. The key witness that claimed that Maddie was taken wrapped in a blanket by a man on the 3rd of May of 2007 from a flat in Praia da Luz, Algarve, was heavily shaken when she admitted to the authorities that she only left the Tapas Bar, where she dinned with the McCanns and more six friends, after the alarm given by Kate. Jane Tanner admits that she saw a person before she went to dine but she did not see with precision what that person was carrying and it could be a simple tenant of the Ocean Club. “It was a precious deposition because it permits to concentrate the investigation in only one line, meaning that Maddie’s parents are involved in the disappearance of the child direct or indirectly”, said to 24 Horas a high judicial responsible connected to the process. According to the same source, “the thesis of an eventual abduction is more and more weak”. “It would be good that the McCanns and friends accepted to come to Portugal to do a reconstruction on the 15th and 16th of May, of all the events that occurred between the 18 and 23 hours of that day”. And the same responsible launches an appeal:” This is not a cat and mouse game. This is not a game. It is the life of a child we are talking about. If they want to help fine but if they demand things that the authorities cannot accomplish… No one cam make miracles if there is no cooperation from them”.
The team of three persons that the PJ sent to England, returned yesterday to Portugal. Next Monday they will meet with the director of the PJ Guilhermino da Encarnação as well as with the public prosecutors Luis Verão and Magalhães e Menezes. The objective is to evaluate all the interrogatories made in England and decide the next steps.

Will consistent posters receive apologies?
I’m wondering if the Pros who have argued that the cartoon man was real and Tanner was not fibbing might be about to apologise to those of us who took the contrary view?
Will this be the first of many apologies, now we know the McCanns were as bad at parental care as we have been suggesting?
____________
Ian, we have all agreed (at least I’ve seen none that didn’t) they neglected their children that night and supposedly prior nights while there. How could one miss the neglect - a child is missing from being left alone at too young an age.
The ‘differences’ amongst the posters on here are who is responsible for actual ‘physical hands-on’ disappearance of the young child from the apartment.

As far as I can see the only source for this is 24 horas, and I have to agree with various other posters that it’s difficult to believe, because if there were anything in it, the world would have exploded by now.
Still, I live in hope for a reality-based resolution of this whole bizarre soap opera.

Um… hate to spoil the party, but I’ve been checking this out as promised earlier.
Ian - WHERE is this supposed report of JT not having left the bar? It’s not on Duarte Levy’s blog or in the Sun story.
So I guess I’ll go back to my: ‘perhaps JT was persuaded to retract her sightings by the TMcC lawyers, because that opens up the abduction window a little’.
But then we’re back to ‘Why did the Leics Police, according to Levy, say:
“Some of the group have lied… Given what we’ve heard these last couple of days, we simply can’t understand why the parents continue to accept everything they [T7] say” (my translation)
Unless someone (Ian?) can provide a link to the ‘JT never left Bar’ story, I’ll revert to my earlier question: what does this statement (if correctly reported by Duarte Levy) mean?
And, why doesn’t it actually HELP the MCs, rather than compromise them?????
