We live in a throw away Society, 10 Billion pounds worth of good food for example,Office lights left on all night, Street lights too.!!!

Powys had a good idea when they decided to switch off all street lighting after Dusk.
Trouble was, people were having their cars pinched from outside their Homes
and disabled people couldn"t see where they were going to avoid an accident.

What's rather funny is that for the last 8 years we've been pumping as much CO2 into the atmosphere as ever.

But the temperature hasn't gone up as predicted. In fact, it's gone down rather sharply. Proving, pretty obviously, that putting out lots of CO2 does NOT make the temperature go up. Which is the fundamental basis behind all of this rubbish about saving electricty.

Save it if you want to. But don't think you're saving the world. Cos you ain't....

I agree with Karen If the whole world isnt worried about the environment whats the point ? We can do all we like ,but the largest countries of the world have to help as well. Is that likely?

Well actually, leaving equipment in a standby mode does waste a lot of electricity.
My mother used to turn her TV off every night at the wall plug. The next day, when she turned it back on, it would come on at full volume. Thus blasting her, and the neighbors, until she turned it down with the remote.
I fixed this by buying her a new set, (see.. I'm not all bad).
The lab I work in has a very high electricity bill as we have to leave most of our more complex instruments on all the time to ensure stable readings.

There's no way any of us can save the environment when the whole of our society is designed to trash it. We'd have to reorganise.

But it's not as if the human race is going to last forever anyway - it's just not possible, one thing or another will get us - I'd rather have fun till the meteor hits or the Sun supernovas or the next ice-age starts or the bacteria take over....

I try to save the planet in lots of ways; I am vegetarian, recycle, drive a Smart car, put stuff on Freecycle etc etc.

I cannot however get to grips with losing the standby option or switching lights on and off. I also like the heating on in winter and aircon in summer. I have a 'busy' house which means 6 TVs and assorted linked equipment of playstations etc. All on standby.

Guess I'm an environmental schizophrenic so I LOVE the above calculations that have freed my conscience forever. Thank you Anorak!
