Indeed so; the Republican party of the past might have thought LBJ had done the right thing.

McCain probably thinks LBJ did the right thing.

I’m not so sure about the rest of the Republican party…

On the other hand it was LBJ who forced through the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Voting Rights Act in 1965, and appointed the first African American to the Supreme Court…

It was their snobbery over rednecks and all their famous supporters (well, Susan Saradon and Michael Moore) that lost the Democrats the last election.

The party of the people shouldn’t be sneering at the people.

Where as the Republicans - being the party of aspiration - can get away with it if the economy is ok (which this time around it isn’t).

(it also bugs me the way the Democrats cover up their racist past - the South mostly voted Democrat and the most famous racist - Governor George Wallace - was a democrat - even if it was only a strategy).
