Tonybee Swots Up On Social Mobility

by | 4th, November 2008

POLLY Tonybee is writing about social mobility in the Guardian.

But now with a recession upon us:

But for now, until the blow strikes, the latest figures suggest Labour may be making real social progress

Any evidence, Polly?

True results in social mobility research take a generation, not a decade. But there are hopeful signs. More poor pupils are getting five good GCSEs, thereby outdoing their parents.

These would be the parents, who unless they took the derided GCSE and gave birth soon after 1988, when the GCSE came in, took the GCE, the exam that was harder to pass.

Yeah the sure sign of social mobility – people on the up – is that teenagers are encouraged to take exams that are easier to pass…

Really.
