She was a devoted mother, hard-working, determined and tough. Then, one spring morning, Christine Collins kissed her little child goodbye (leaving him under the eye of neighbours), before returning in the evening to an empty house. Her beloved son had vanished without a trace.
A continent-wide hunt was launched and a shocked nation was kept agog by a string of leads - only for their hopes to be cruelly dashed as each clue led to a dead end.
The child was never seen again, the mother was heartbroken and the community was left divided by suspicion and mistrust.
Terrible. Just terrible. Does it work out in the end?
It could be the tragic story of Kate and Gerry McCann and their three-year-old daughter, Madeleine, who was abducted last year while on holiday in Portugal, and who remains missing to this day.
It could be, albeit with better lighting, a decent cast and a 15 certificate… Gone, Baby, Gone…
But, in fact, it is the plot of Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Changeling, which opens in Britain later this month.
But it’s all false, right? Angelina Jolie is only acting, right? Unless she adopted Madeleine?
It is all the more powerful because it is based on a horrific true story. The so-called ‘Wineville chicken coop murders’ took place on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1928.
And while they happened 80 years before Maddie McCann disappeared, there are startling parallels between the two.
The McCanns’ grim experience in Praia de Luz - and how they were made suspects by bungling local police - was widely reported.
But Christine Collins suffered even worse treatment at the hands of the LA Police Department. As the investigation into her missing child failed to yield results, she was even locked up in a mental asylum.
It’s enough to drive you maaaaad. Maaaaad, I tell yer…
As in the McCann case, rumour followed rumour.

recon be publcised?
The PJ should have arranged it while they were still in Portugal I admit. Madelein e”s
face was known Worldwide within weeks thanks to the speed that No Stone Unturned
was set up and after 18 months . Maybe if she was abducted this sealed her fate.

No no Val, you’ve gotten that wrong
If a reconstruction (which incidentally would involve time lines) were to take place then in the interests of finding Madeleine they wanted it to be broadcast similar to that of crimewatch which may have given a real chance of someone remembering something.
But they weren’t going to agree to a reconstruction purely to help the PJ get an understanding of the time lines.

All the fuss about wanting the Files because they thought the P:J had not chnased up
every sighting proved groundless……the PJ HAD been diligent.
I remember Clarence being interviewed by Eamon Holmes on GMTV at the time
saying how the Files would be passed to the McCAnn Lawyers to sift through,
Eamon said ” The Lawyers? Why? surely it should be the Detective Agency? CM
mumbled “of course”, but Eamon then asked how much was left in the Fund so
obviously had suspicions.

Gander your last post was so stuffed full of obscenities it was impossible to understand what your point was. Perhaps you have the same literacy deficits as poor waspy?
The prolonged and persistent neglect of very young children throughout that holiday was pertinent whatever you may say. Either the neglect led to an outsider doing something to M, or more likely it was symptomatic of their attitude and behaviour to thier children which led ot something happening within the apartment without any outside intervention. It is clear to most parents that they were ’so into each other’ and their so-called friends that thier main aim was to palm off their children during the day and abandon them at night without even for whatever reason availing themselves of a minding service (not just a listening service) which early on they claimed was not available.
