She was a devoted mother, hard-working, determined and tough. Then, one spring morning, Christine Collins kissed her little child goodbye (leaving him under the eye of neighbours), before returning in the evening to an empty house. Her beloved son had vanished without a trace.
A continent-wide hunt was launched and a shocked nation was kept agog by a string of leads - only for their hopes to be cruelly dashed as each clue led to a dead end.
The child was never seen again, the mother was heartbroken and the community was left divided by suspicion and mistrust.
Terrible. Just terrible. Does it work out in the end?
It could be the tragic story of Kate and Gerry McCann and their three-year-old daughter, Madeleine, who was abducted last year while on holiday in Portugal, and who remains missing to this day.
It could be, albeit with better lighting, a decent cast and a 15 certificate… Gone, Baby, Gone…
But, in fact, it is the plot of Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Changeling, which opens in Britain later this month.
But it’s all false, right? Angelina Jolie is only acting, right? Unless she adopted Madeleine?
It is all the more powerful because it is based on a horrific true story. The so-called ‘Wineville chicken coop murders’ took place on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1928.
And while they happened 80 years before Maddie McCann disappeared, there are startling parallels between the two.
The McCanns’ grim experience in Praia de Luz - and how they were made suspects by bungling local police - was widely reported.
But Christine Collins suffered even worse treatment at the hands of the LA Police Department. As the investigation into her missing child failed to yield results, she was even locked up in a mental asylum.
It’s enough to drive you maaaaad. Maaaaad, I tell yer…
As in the McCann case, rumour followed rumour.

I have worked in courts for well over twenty years and find in trial cases people often work out what a normal person would do in a situation and then do the complete opposite to try and leave a muddle for the justice department to sort out.
Please keep airing this problem and the truth will come out in the end. Most of you are very bright and you should be able to work it all out for yourselves. I do hope that one day the truth will emerge.

This is the second time in less than a month that a thread has just “disappeared”.
However we were given an explanation, of sorts, re what may have happened to
it, but no info regarding the latest “disappearance”.
I cannot provide handwritten timelines regarding these “disappearances”.
Well, I could, but I won’t, as I don’t want it to be said that I sat down and
composed such unimportant contrivances when I should have been out
actually “searching” for the “disappeared” threads.
BTW….if anyone sees a smilie posted, that they would like to use, all that
needs to be done is to hover your pointer over the aforementioned smilie,
and it will show, quite clearly, the keystrokes required to reproduce, and
thereby post that particular smilie.

Translation of Father Pacheco’s Statement to the PJ 30th October 2007
The first time he had contact with the McCanns was on 5th May at about 19.00. This was a personal contact with them in the Ocean Club at their apartment, but not the apartment Madeleine disappeared from. They were accompanied by members of the holiday group.
This was an important meeting for the McCanns and which had not been possible to the fact that they were busy. He knows that on the fateful night the McCanns requested the presence of a priest, but he was only informed the following morning.
On the 5th, the theme they talked about was the disappearance and he gave all possible spiritual comfort and they prayed together. They also agreed that the couple would go to the church the following day to attend a mass.
He also prayed with the McCanns on the 6th and 8th May in their apartment.
He gave them the key to the church on the 7th or 8th May upon the suggestion of John Geraghty, a resident of the parish, so that they could calmly go to the church without any media pressure. Someone from the church gave the key to John Geraghty, who then passed it on to the McCanns, with Father Pacheco’s permission.
He does not remember the date upon which the key was returned.
Other contact with the McCanns took place at the end of mass when he would comfort them.
He would also meet with the McCanns after they returned from their trips and remembered they were animated when they returned from Morocco as they thought they would Madeleine there. He also comforted Kate when the news of a child buried in Arau broke, as she revealed great nervousness and anxiety, thinking that the child had died.
When questioned, he said he never heard their confessions, perhaps because they only spoke English.
He never talked to them alone.
He states that they showed great suffering to the loss of their daughter.
He adds that a parish bulletin was published giving spiritual, moral and human support to the couple and to other missing children.

Had the McCanns injured or killed their child, either by accident or intent, WHY would they have brought this huge LE and media onslaught down on their own heads?
Having then escaped by the skin of their teeth, WHY would they not have breathed a sigh of relief and slunk quietly away months ago when they were cleared (and they were) and the case shelved (and it was)? These are two of the big three questions to which I keep returning. Can you think of ANY cogent answer?
Similarly, why would your opponents in this debate not have gone to ground at the same time? They WON this argument months ago. You’re left lobbing insults with Coco and Doris. Do you not get that?
