Fact. Fiction. Can you spot the difference?
She was a devoted mother, hard-working, determined and tough. Then, one spring morning, Christine Collins kissed her little child goodbye (leaving him under the eye of neighbours), before returning in the evening to an empty house. Her beloved son had vanished without a trace.
A continent-wide hunt was launched and a shocked nation was kept agog by a string of leads - only for their hopes to be cruelly dashed as each clue led to a dead end.
The child was never seen again, the mother was heartbroken and the community was left divided by suspicion and mistrust.
Terrible. Just terrible. Does it work out in the end?
It could be the tragic story of Kate and Gerry McCann and their three-year-old daughter, Madeleine, who was abducted last year while on holiday in Portugal, and who remains missing to this day.
It could be, albeit with better lighting, a decent cast and a 15 certificate… Gone, Baby, Gone…
But, in fact, it is the plot of Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Changeling, which opens in Britain later this month.
But it’s all false, right? Angelina Jolie is only acting, right? Unless she adopted Madeleine?
It is all the more powerful because it is based on a horrific true story. The so-called ‘Wineville chicken coop murders’ took place on the outskirts of Los Angeles in 1928.
And while they happened 80 years before Maddie McCann disappeared, there are startling parallels between the two.
The McCanns’ grim experience in Praia de Luz - and how they were made suspects by bungling local police - was widely reported.
But Christine Collins suffered even worse treatment at the hands of the LA Police Department. As the investigation into her missing child failed to yield results, she was even locked up in a mental asylum.
It’s enough to drive you maaaaad. Maaaaad, I tell yer…
As in the McCann case, rumour followed rumour.

Just for clarity, my point was with regard to the so called ‘doggy’ evidence that Montaillou implies as ‘fact’ to some underhand goings on on the part of the McCanns.
With regard to the ‘no evidence’ then you have to ask yourself what would be the point of Tanner claiming to have seen a man walking away from the apartment with a child in his arms at a time which would fall in line with Madeleines disappearance?
Either Tanner is lying or she’s not.
If she were lying then what was the reason? Are we to believe in this whole sad conspiracy rubbish without a shred of evidence collected to back it up but have faith in the wild theories flying around because it suits?
Or would it be more apt to go along with the fact that she was actually telling the truth and a child was taken?
Of course we still have the ex chief investigating officer claiming the McCanns are lying.
But who in their right mind would believe such a person who leaked information to the Portuguese press in order to sway public opinion? And who would have much faith in an investigating officer who himself was made an arguido over a similar case? And who would also believe an investigating officer who himself is able to hide behind the Portuguese system of law?
On the other hand the McCanns have been bound by the Portuguese system. They have been investigated by the Portuguese for some 15 months but the case couldn’t even make the courts.
So back to your point, unless it can be proved that Tanners’ claim was due to some ulterior motive then I tend to go with the thought that she was telling the truth.
And I’ll stick with that as ‘evidence’ of an abduction.

I used to come on this forum every day but there is’nt really much to be said anymore. Maddie can be linked to all sorts of news stories, films etc on even the slightest similarity and will surely become a legend where truth, half-truth and fiction become one.
Will there be a Christmas interview with K and G, another outbreak of “sightings”, some new smear, rumour or breakthrough?
Who was Jack the Ripper…was Kennedy shot by the secret services…was Diana murdered…what really happened to Madeleine McCann?

Garth says no evidence that the family did it, and as far as we know from “the process” he is absolutely right.
But he ignores the fact that, as far as we know from “the process”, there is absolutely no evidence of an abduction either (and Clarence Mitchell confirmed months ago that there was no evidence of a break in)
so we are just left with the alien theory, or that M walked out and got lost. which one is it Garth?

Certainly evidence? Evidence of what exactly? Evidence that Madeleine McCann came to a fate in that apartment at the hands of one of her family? Evidence that she may have been smothered by someone who entered the apartment? Evidence that a scent of cadaver had been planted? Evidence that the dogs aren’t to be relied on? Evidence that someone else had come to an ill fated end prior to the McCanns occupying the apartment? Evidence maybe that someone in contact with a cadaver had passed on the scent?
There are a whole host of potential reasons for the dogs supposedly picking up cadaver.
I would guess that had the PJ had once ounce of evidence to link the cadaver to a cover up by the McCanns then we would have seen them in court. Even if that evidence was circumstantial which, and going by the leaks which many have believed (and which have frenzied up the likes of you and your little friends) then surely they would have ended up in court.
The problem is they weren’t
It’s not a problem for me however but moreover its a problem for you. And i say that because although the possibility of cadaver cannot be explained i can accept that there has been not one ounce of evidence, circumstantial or otherwise, that would even remotely implicate the McCanns or their friends which in short, is the opinion of the AG.
Do you think you might get it now or will you still be a big dreamer with a little mind?

E & K’s behaviour is carefully described. Unfortunately there was no corroborating evidence, or at least none has as yet come to light. We all know that, we have known it ever since this case began. So, Waspy, what do you imagine the discussion and debate and a certain amount of informed speculation are about? Dear heart, try to get this straight, once and for all, it is about what happened, or indeed what was caused to happen to the corroborating evidence, or what could yet occur to bring it to light.
