DAILY STAR: “Caring appeals backers ‘conned’”

The Stars looks at the sponsored walk for Missing Shannon. And a disco. No mention is made of the Sun’s largesse.

DAILY EXPRESS: It’s the story surmised in tabloidese, yer honour:

“It was claimed that mother-of-seven Matthews faked Shannon’s kidnap with sci-fi fantasist Michael Donovan to try to pocket a £50,000 reward from the media”

“Mother’s lust for officer’” – “Karen Matthews lusted for sex with a policeman”.

Dim the torchlight. Cue the ringtone…

“The mother-of-seen made saucy remarks…”

THE GUARDIAN: “Shannon’s mother like Jekyll and Hyde, court hears”

Karen Matthews switched characters like Jekyll and Hyde as her neighbours and police hunted vainly for the schoolgirl daughter whose kidnap she had organised, a court heard yesterday.

It’s always Jekyll and Hyde. It’s there a new analogy we can draw upon? In any case, Dr Jekyll was guilty of self-medicating and was clearly mentally ill. Shame on the Guardian for mocking him.

The 33-year-old surprised friends by changing within minutes from a tearful mother in public, to privately sniggering about wanting sex with one of the police officers stationed outside her house.

DEWSBURY REPORTER: “’Rules’ she Shannon had to follow”

Prosecuting, Julian Goose QC, said: “Inside the flat she was given rules of what she could and could not do. This was later found on top of the television in the lounge.

“It is clear from that document that Shannon was being kept quiet. It was important to the plan between the two defendants that Shannon was not discovered until such time as they planned to release her.”

Did they care for Shannon?

Ms Matthews and Mr Donovan deny joint charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
