Hardcore sitting: more extreme than it sounds

Hardcore sitting does not involve watching an entire season of 24 over the course of a weekend. Although we’ve been there and endured a concentrated dose of Jack Bauer, we couldn’t call it a sport.

Hardcore sitting does involve performing backflips and other tricks in a wheelchair. We haven’t tried it, but it definitely is a sport.

The extreme sport of hardcore sitting was created by American teenager Aaron Fotheringham. He is the first person ever to perform a backflip in a wheelchair – he can now perform six: count ’em! – flips in a row.

Fotheringham has spina bifida and has been confined to a wheelchair since he was three. We don’t know what prompted young Aaron to first think, “Hey, why don’t I try to break my neck in this thing…”, but it’s a remarkable feat.
