Zara Phillips’ HAB Done For Drink Driving (Again)

by | 9th, January 2009

NOT a good week for sportsmen and motors, is it? First, Cristiano Ronaldo wrote off his new Ferrari. Now comes news that Mike Tindall, professional rugby player, Jason Statham lookalike and HAB (Husband and Boyfriend) of royal filly Zara Phillips, has been convicted for drink driving – and not for the first time.

Here’s how it went down:

Last March, Tindall was seen driving erratically on his way back from the Cheltenham Festival to commentate on a Six Nations match at Twickenham. When stopped by police officers, who smelled alcohol on his breath, he admitted he had drunk the previous day.

Yeah, that’s an understatement:

Tindall, who got a 16-month ban for drink-driving in 2000, had downed a bottle of Budweiser, a Becks and a pint of Carling on the day of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. That evening, after attending the races with Phillips, he polished off seven glasses of champagne, a pint, a vodka and Red Bull, and the obligatory pint of his own urine (we made up that last drink, but if anyone’s going to do it, it’s a rugby player).

That’s a good tally, and it was no surprise that Tindall was still over the limit the next morning. The former World Cup winner was banned from driving for three years and fined £500.

Here’s the best bit: at the time of the offence, Tindall was out of action with a torn liver. Boom boom! No, really, he was. We couldn’t make that up.
