CAROL Vorderman’s principled campaign to raise the minimum wage for TV adder uppers and Milfs, has caused outrage in the media labour market.

Steve Roberts was heard to shout “This is for sacking Carol” before pouring a bucket of iced water over Channel 4 daytime boss Helen Warner.

It is said that Granada employee Mr Roberts – perhaps no fan of Vorderman’s cheaper, blonder, yonger and leggier replacement Rachel Riley – did then leave the Broadcast Awards at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel in Park Lane, Mayfair and smoke a cigarette, in the manner of a villain on Poirot, Midsomer Murders or The Bill.

Reports say he was later arrested and spent the night in the cells.

Granada suspended him. He then resigned. Says an ITV spokesman:

A spokesman for ITV said: “A freelance journalist for ITV Granada was involved in an incident with a Channel 4 employee at an awards ceremony and as a result this person is no longer working for us.

“ITV has issued a personal apology to the Channel 4 staff member concerned.”

A spokesman for Channel 4 described the attack as “unprovoked”.

Many Countdown enthusiasts may have preferred it that Roberts poured a bucket of cold water over the aforesaid Riely, or Vorderman, preferably waiting until either were sporting tight-fitting knitted jumpers to pounce.

(Wetting her knickers in class was the low point of TV star Carol Vorderman’s primary school career. But, as her meteoric rise has proven, it is possible to get over these little hiccups.)

The one other regret was that the do was not televised by the BBC.
