There were two incidents lately. On was a chair that exploded (no one was hurt) and the other was a teen hurt in a chair explosion.

The picture shown here is from the first story. Allegedly the chair exploded overnight in an office cubicle. The employee returned in the morning and they took pictures of it. The steel rod was blown through the top of the chair. I think this one is a hoax. That chair is obliterated.

The second story (the teen one) was similar but the steel rod didn’t drive through his anus. Seriously folks, that’s dumb. What did happen was this. The boy was not sitting on the chair but adjacent to it. The outer housing ruptured and a shard of metal penetrated his abdomen and lodged in his lung. He did die from internal bleeding probably complicated by the fact that he couldn’t breathe.

If you could read Chinese and paid attention to the Chinese dailies (Xinhua state news or WenXue city website) you’d know this.

As a final comment. Use your brains people. Think of how many pneumatic chairs are in the office buildings around you. Times that by the office buildings in your city, times the cities in your state, times the states in the nation, times the nations in the world. Ok. So that’s a crapload of chairs. And we’ve seen what, 2 stories about them exploding. @18 GuitarHero - you are dumb and reactionary.

Tha ‘highly pressurized gas’ in air, and it is only pressurized to the extent that it supports the weight of the chair’s occupant. If the boy weighed 80 kilos, then the total force the pneumatic cylinder produced could not be more than 80 kilos.

I doubt that 80 kilos is enough force to drive chair parts through the bottom of the chair and into the occupant, let alone with enough force to kill him. If the chair actually killed anyone, it is far more likely that the chair collapsed and the boy was impaled by the cylinder as he fell onto it.

I speak from the personal experience of having been blown up, by an exploding regulator on an oxygen cylinder; I can provide an informed description of what it is like to be in a room with a fire being fed by pure oxygen, and I can honestly say that in the nano seconds as I was flying through the air I was praying ‘Please God let all the other cylinders blow because I don’t't want to be roasted alive..’

It was extremely selfish of me, since such an explosion would have taken out a very large chunk of the Barbican; the vast array of glass there would have been smashed inwards cutting people to shreds. On the other hand, when you find yourself faced with the roasted alive option, concern for others tends to fade… .
