We call it the gossip hour now, the only original possibly factual stuff is from the Met Office.
We are all aware that the actual news is depressing, worrying and unpleasant in fact when isn’t it? but they could end on a cheerful note. Celeb activity is so depressing too - seemingly just fights divorces and deaths or a parade of Size 0, and the only flicker of interest how come they are still alive.

June… while I was away on hols the internet connection (despite being wireless and on my laptop) cost a bomb so I connected briefly once a day with my eye on the clock. I checked emails, Facebook (messages from kids) and Sky as I’m addicted to the news. Nearly every time the main headlines were St Jade Goody’s doings, the Blessed Cheryl Cole up a mountain and her demonic husband somewhere else!

In other words you’re almost there with the Heat/OK/Hello scenario.
