BBC pundit compares football tackle to rape

ALAN Pardew’s punditry career is in the toilet – much like his managerial career, then – after he compared a Michael Essien tackle to “rape”. Oops.

Commenting on Sunday’s Match of the Day 2, alongside Alan Hansen on the pundit’s sofa, Pardew analysed a Michael Essien tackle with the following gem:

“He’s [Essien] a strong boy. He knocks him [Ched Evans] off… he absolutely rapes him.”

Neither host Adrian Chiles or Hansen seemed to pick up on the gaffe, perhaps believing that Pards said “rakes” instead. Or perhaps they were too shocked to say anything at the time.

Pardew has since apologised, “unconditionally”, for the verbal slip, but it’s a safe bet that he won’t be appearing on the sofa again this season.
