Oxford University Gives Media A Chance To Mock Kerry Katona

by | 28th, April 2009

kerry-katona-oxfordNEWS is that Kerry Katona to address The Oxford Union. Or, perhaps, the Oxford Union is to receive Kerry Katona.

Says an Oxford Union spokesman of the speech being filmed for Katona’s MTV reality television series:

“We invite a diverse range of speakers and we think that our members will be interested to hear Kerry Katona, who will be speaking about her mental illness and how it has affected her life.

“She has had an interesting relationship with the media and the British public, and we look forward to having her at The Union.”

Previous speakers at the “world-famous debating society” include the Dalai Lama, Malcolm X, Richard Nixon and Mother Teresa. So says the Oxford Union website.

Other speakers include: Kermit the Frog, Diego Maradona, Sally Gunnell, Geoffrey Boycott and Chris Eubank. But these are given less space by a media that seems to find it incredible that Katona would be afforded the apparent honour of speaking before a gaggle of students in a lecture hall.

The media reaction Katona’s appointment is snooty to the point to fascism. It assumes that Katona needs the Oxford Union – a union for students; how free thinking is that? – and not that a school assembly room in the provinces needs a media star.

No, not a reality TV star, as the newspapers and broadcasters would tell us – but a media star who features on more front pages than Gordon Brown, the Dalai Lama and David Cameron combined.

You may have thought pigs might fly before you spotted Kerry Katona at Oxford University but the smarty pants on campus are poised for a shock – Metro

A spot of misogyny:

This Kerry story is BIZARRE – Let’s face it, if this bizarre event actually takes place, it will be Kerry Katona’s only chance of stepping foot in Oxford Uni. That’s right folks, mum-of-four Kerry is set to follow in the footsteps of inspirational figures Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama, by addressing the famous Oxford Union. It is thought troubled Kerry will talk about her battle with drink and drugs, and the rumours that she will divorce Mark Croft – subjects that clearly keep the brainy Oxford students up at night. We’re just hoping the big wigs at the Union have got confused that Kerry’s actually the Queen of Iceland and call the whole thing off! – Heat

Kerry Katona to address Oxford Union: world officially turned to shit HolyMoly

What these commentators tell us is that they believe they are superior to Kerry Katona and that – and this is the best bit – they wish to uphold the honour of a school that once invited Holocaust denier David Irving to speak.

Other great and good speakers booked to address those students who don’t own a PlayStation and want to know how to work with celebrities when they get jobs at the BBC are:

Anna Kourikova, comedian Jonathan Davies, Hollywood actor Martin Sheen, West Wing actor Richard Schiff, the entire Sri Lankan cricket team, presenter Ben Fogle and UK Vogue editor, Alex Shulman.

Katona holds her own in that crowd. But the press release mentions:

Katona, who was married to Westlife’s Brian McFadden, has attracted controversy over alleged drug use.

When her speech appeared to be slurred in an appearance on This Morning last year, Katona claimed medication for her bipolar disorder was to blame.

Allegations of drug use at a school for grown ups? Wow! Surreal…
