For the last month or so, we Americans have been engaged in some serious soul-searching, exploring the depths of our psyches as we dealt with two issues that threatened to forever alter the way we live our lives. No, I don’t mean the recession and torture. I am, of course, talking about Susan Boyle and Carrie Prejean: one, a talented singer of ordinary appearance who defied the prejudice of her audience to become an international sensation; the other, a beauty queen who defied the utter nonsense of the phrase “opposite marriage” to become a mouthpiece for the anti-gay-marriage movement and the most controversial pageant contestant since Vanessa Williams. If you’re like me, you’ve spent a lot of time watching headlines about these two women scroll across a variety of screens and thinking, “Is there no one who can simultaneously reduce the stories of these two women — and, in fact, the entire female population — to the most disgustingly simplistic of terms?”

Susan Boyle Not the Only Person Who’s Judged By Her Looks

Well, there’s Carrie Prejean…

We’ve all faced mean girls, and sometimes we’ve even been them. Spurred by the Susan Boyle craziness, iReporters, a group of citizen journalists who work with CNN, decided to have a multimedia conversation about how it feels to be judged on looks. There’s Tony Posnanski, who noticed that after he lost 200 pounds, people treated him a lot differently… Robin Savage, whose crooked teeth earned her the childhood nickname, “piranha teeth,” now has veneers, but admits, “It stays with you a long time.”

Says Erin Flaherty who “began dealing in mascara and hair pomade when she started her beauty career at Allure in 2000″.

She still appears to be very uncomfortable with all the attention if yesterday’s trip to the capital was anything to go by.

Having landed at Heathrow from her £77 economy flight from Edinburgh shortly after midday, Miss Boyle immediately got in fuss when a member of the public asked for her to pose for a photograph with his wife.

She had just come through domestic arrivals from her BMI flight when the man approached her. She ignored the man’s request and when he asked again then persisted to go ahead and get a photograph, she told him to ‘F*** off’ and darted with her assistant into an elevator - Daily Mail

Now had she smashed his camera to pieces or wrestled with him, Boyle would be a true star…
