madeleine-mccann-posterMADELEINE McCann Watch: Anorak’s at-a-glance look at Madeleine McCann in the news – Raymond Hewlett says he saw Our Maddie alive and that he, er, didn’t…

Daily Mirror: “PAEDO: I’VE NEVER SEEN MADELEINE”

The prime suspect of hired cops probing Maddie McCann’s disappearance insisted last night: “I’ve never set eyes on her.”

Dying paedophile Raymond Hewlett, 64, angrily denied claims he was twice close enough to her to notice her distinctive right eye.

He said: “I have never seen her and anyone who says anything different is wrong.”

So news that he had seen her alive is wrong?

He refuses to speak to investigators hired by the McCanns. But he was grilled at home in Aachen, Germany, by West Yorkshire police last week over the 1975 murder of schoolgirl Lesley Molseed and rape of a girl of eight in Yorkshire.

Lesley Molseed…

Ronald Castree, 54, will serve a minimum of 30 years for what the judge called “a truly dreadful crime”, adding that he accepted the killer would probably die in jail.

Lesley Molseed, from Rochdale, was abducted and killed in 1975, in a case which resulted in one of Britain’s most notorious miscarriages of justice.

Her body was found on Rishworth Moor in West Yorkshire and Stefan Kiszko, a lonely misfit, confessed to the crime under duress.

He was jailed and served 16 years before he was cleared in 1991 when it emerged that sperm samples taken from her clothes could not have been his, as he was infertile. He died the following year.

Says Raymond Hewlett:

“I volunteered to speak to police about things totally unrelated to Madeleine. They didn’t mention her once.” He denies the crimes and gave cops a DNA sample.

Now know…

SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY

“I saw Maddy before she vanished, says paedophile”

CONVICTED paedophile Raymond Hewlett has claimed he saw Madeleine McCann twice before she disappeared, it emerged yesterday.

Or, er, not…

Meanwhile…

NEWS OF THE WORLD:

THE former police chief who led the hunt for Madeleine McCann in Portugal plans to sue parents Kate and Gerry for defamation.

Goncalo Amaral, 49, has hired a team of lawyers to prepare an action against the two doctors.

And the cop, dropped from the inquiry in October 2007 for criticising British police, says he will also seek damages from the McCann’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell. His action comes weeks after the McCanns revealed they were suing Amaral over a book he wrote.

And on it goes…

Madeleine McCann is missing. Her parents are bereft.  And the lawyers are doing pretty, pretty, pretty good…

And finally this gem from Agnès Poirier, who manages to link the murders of “two French students murdered by men who should have been in custody”, and a sense of outrage in France,  with you know who…

Many Portuguese people must have felt the same way when Madeleine McCann disappeared from their idyllic seaside resort and their police were seemingly losing time in the crucial first days of the investigation. I have many Italian friends embarrassed both by the murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia and much of what transpired since.

Of course, misunderstandings can take a grip and be exacerbated by cultural differences. Remember how, in the case of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, the British press viciously attacked the Portuguese judiciary system and its representatives, often only out of sheer ignorance. The Portuguese police reacted by making the parents “official suspects“.

Yeah, it was the media’s ranting and Portuguese spite than led to the innocent McCanns being named suspects or, rather, arguidos”. So now we know…
