Remember The British Troops In Afghanistan
THE war on terror rages on. In Afghanistan, out of sight of the media celebrity gawp, inadequately equipped British troops are bing killed.
First-person reporting on the war has been rare. “Terry Taliban” is taking lives. It’s 40 degrees centigrade in Afghanistan. And then you have to pull on your kit, move and fight.
How many have died? It’s a game of Tabloid Bingo. Those front-page numbers that shock:
Daily Telegrpah: “8 soldiers die in one day”
The Sun: “HORROR IN AFGHANISTAN – 10 DAYS - 15 DEAD”
Daily Express: “Eight soldiers killed as Afghan death toll overtakes number of troops lost in Iraq”
Indepedent: “Toll rises to 15 dead in nine days”
Daily Mirror: “28 soldiers die on one day”
The Times: “7 years 9 months – 184 lives”
In action, the number killed is 153. A futher 31 have been killed in accidents. So far. War is bloody and dangerous.

As the wife of a serving officer, I come to Anorak for a little light relief from my present addiction of accessing News 24 via mobile, TV, web… June - you are spot on - it beggars belief that we have a government with seemingly no military experience. You would have thought at the very least the defence minister and others in that ministry would have military experience as a pre-requisite. In fact, wouldn’t it make a lot more sense if the Chancellor had some proven expertise in finance and a Minister for Health (recently moved from Culture, Media and Sport) had some subject knowledge too…?
Moderator - perhaps make your way to the Forums and start a thread, you will have to register. Dr David Kelly is today’s topic , again…

This current mob have the same attitude as those in power in WW1 ie the populace is just cannon fodder.
If they had conscription this would HAVE to include MP’s grown children, and they might stop and think.
Anyway , historically, no one has ever solved any problems in Afghanistan and the losses have always been great, its only when politicians begin to lose face do they consider withdrawing troops

We have just had the MP’s Expenses publicised, can we now have the MP’s declare details of their children involved in armed conflict, with a non commisioned rank ?

Yossarian,
I don’t think there are any military types now in the Commons at all.
This is the problem with the Western world , we make and sell war machines and then 30 years later the next generation are facing the nasty end of them

One of the cruel ironies about this situation is we trained the talib/muj in guerilla warfare during their dust up with krazy Ivan back in the eighties. Regarding your other point, I’m pretty sure there isn’t one Labour MP who has served so much as a day in the forces, which tells it’s own story

This is a nightmare with no end in sight. How do you know who the enemy is? I’m guessing there’s no uniform in the Taliban. How do you protect yourself against bombs planted just about everywhere? Those poor bastards have my sympathy. I think about them every day risking their lives.

so some terrorist/guerilla warfare training needed too, its all lack of funds and preparation, perhaps fewer lawyers/bankers/crooks in the Commons and some more military types?

It’s not just the equipment that’s wrong, it’s our tactics and our inability to adapt to changing Taliban tactics. If you give every one of our soldiers a tank to drive round in the the Taliban will shoot him on Sunday morning while he is washing it.

Odd really how there is an endless pot for MPs’ expenses, but not enough to properly kit out and arm the UK military. Lets hope we see some changes .
Especially now as they are no longer ‘out of sight, out of mind’
