Madeleine McCann Coverage Turns Man Into Paedophile

Western & Somerset Mercury: “Pervert ‘guilty’ in child porn case”
A PERVERT in his 20s has pleaded guilty to downloading child pornography after his interest was stoked by media reports of the Madeleine McCann case.
John Riches, of Aldwych Close, Burnham, blamed a ‘troubled childhood’ and his inability to express his feelings for his actions.
Getting off on a missing child…
The 25-year-old was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on Monday to a three-year community order with a supervision requirement after admitting 11 counts of making indecent photographs of a child at an earlier hearing.
His Honour Judge Longman also ordered Riches to pay costs of £320, participate in a sexual offenders’ treatment programme and to sign the sex offenders’ register for five years.
John Weatherall, defending, said: “He was something of a closed book when I first represented him.
“He did say at the time that it was not sexual interest. He said his interest had been raised by reports in the media of celebrities looking at material and about issues such as the Madeleine McCann case.”
The media coverage was the trigger; the guilty man held a loaded gun. Is the guilty man’s reasoning honest - can a sensationalist media turn you on to crime?

I read that article yesterday in the UK newspaper and was thinking about his defense given as to why he did it. However, it didn’t say if he has a low IQ and child-like mentality. That old saying ‘curiosity killed the cat’ could be applicable to him if he is not of a normal mentality for his age. I’m not looking to make excuses for him or even begin to condone what he did. As normal adults none of us have any desire to set eyes on what the horrors of paedophila is all about, we know about the low scum that is sickening enough.
There is way too much in the newspapers today, some movies made that should not be, that you have to ask what affect does it have on some people to do what they maybe normally wouldn’t do. And then some of what is printed in the newspapers or available on the internet just feeds the true sickos minds.
I’m trying to think of the name of the movie that was out many years ago with a rape scene in it on a beach, two teenage boys committed a like rape months after that movie was out and that was their defense - they saw it in the movie and wanted to see what it was like to do.

Any findings of inappropriate material on the internet can be reported to the Internet Watch Foundation, but they would stress that you CANNOT go searching for it, otherwise you are as guilty as those who go looking for it for their own thrills.
You can, of course, report your findings without giving your details. The SOTP is the best we have in this country, but cannot change an offender’s sexual “orientation”. It tries to show them why it is wrong, but is not a magic wand.
Wonderful thing as it is, the Internet plays a huge part in facilitating this sort of behaviour. It’s responsible for a lot of offenders getting paedophile material who previously would not have had access to it.

He hasn’t been given a prison sentence so unless he is stupid enough to climb over the wall to get in he will not learn anything in prison. Righteous indignation is no substitute for the facts but it helps some pass the time I suppose

Well, some blame their parents, their environment, friends, drugs, etc. etc. etc…
John Riches blames someone else. Anything, any one, any experience. So long as he doesn’t have to take responsibility for his actions. But, not to worry. Mr. Riches, you’ll be taught PLENTY of lessons in prison.
God save your soul

I doubt very much if Police researchers publish their findings on weblogs /sites etc.
The people that do are just wallowing in pseudo moral caretakers mode, or just ‘policing ‘ sites to make it sound official

c&c, I know there are people employed to keep their eye on that sort of thing for the police and children’s charities etc. and I really don’t think I’d be able to do a job like that. I know we’re all different but I don’t see how someone could do this research just to post their findings on a forum where it won’t really do any good for any of the children concerned.
Weird.

I guess he thought that any excuse was better than no excuse but he was wrong, getting off on that stuff is absolutely inexcusable. There seem to be lots of them about.
I have noticed that there is a poster on ‘another’ forum who posts daily reports of p**dop*ile activity all over the world, the speciality being women who abuse children. His/her reportings are justified as ‘justice for Madeleine’.
again… any excuse!

That is odd because the effect on me was never to believe anything a doctor tells you.
