Paradise for perverts is a dusty place in Antioch, California.

JAYCEE Lee Dugard was held captive for 18 years in a squalid neighbourhood crawling with paedophiles and rapists. Her kidnapper Phillip Garrido threw drunken orgies in his back yard and police suspect that local sex fiends took turns abusing Jaycee.

The contest to make this story even worse is being enjoyed by the Star.

More than 140 beasts are registered there after seeking refuge in the dreary, crime-ridden back- water following prison, as they could blend in there unnoticed… Detectives are now piecing together what happened to Jaycee and the two daughters Garrido fathered with her in captivity. Their fear now is that LSD junkie Garrido served up Jaycee like a piece of meat to his predator pals.

The fear is not the fact. The fear may even – get his – titillate the reader.

Polly White, 65, one of Garrido’s neighbours, said: “We found out there’s a predator living up the road and we were less worried about Garrido than the other one.’’

But what about the people not on the sex offenders’ lists? What about Nancy Garrido?

“What she said that I can tell you about is there came a time when she felt like they were a family, and she loves the girls very much and she loved Jaycee very much.” Gilbert Maines, Nancy Garrido’s attorney, told NBC’s The Today Show. “That seems a little strange, given the circumstances, but that’s what she said to me.”

That People maggie is publishing a special cover of Sen. Ted Kennedy - to be distributed just in Massachusetts - on Friday. The new issue, which will include an eight-page photo album and shared memories from F.O.T.s, will feature kidnapping victim Jaycee Dugard on the cover in the rest of the country.

And now Jaycee Dugard’s family start to talk to the media.

Instead of ripping open the box containing her Happy Holidays Christmas Barbie, Jaycee was thrown into her own airtight container..

Vietnam veteran Kenneth Slayton, 64, says:

“When I think about what she went through, it’s just horrible. I’d love to get my hands on Garrido and kill him.” Pointing to a metal hook in his front garden, he paused before adding: “Actually, I wouldn’t kill him - I’d hang him from that pole and he’d be begging for death.”

After decades working with criminals and gang members as a youth counselor and child safety advocate, Janice Gomes says her instincts about people are usually pretty good.

But Phillip Garrido had her fooled.

He printed Gomes’ business cards for 15 years and created fliers for her nonprofit work with the National Community Empowerment Program.

On a job in 2000, a kidnapping-prevention fact sheet, Garrido chimed in with suggestions for Gomes.

“He said, ‘Children should never go to a bus stop alone,’” Gomes said. “He said — what were his exact words — ‘They’re no match for an adult’… He said, ‘If an adult approaches a group, they all scatter and you just grab one. That’s all you want anyhow.’”

And then:

Gomes remembers him singing Madonna, including her hit Like a Virgin. “That’s really freaky now when you think of it,” she said. “‘Touched for the very first time?’ That’s just sickening.”

Well, not really. Kidnapping and raping a child is sickening.
