Roman Polanski Gets Brett Ratner His Big Break
ROMAN Polanski’s arrest is good news for a voracious media looking for the next big debating point. And it’s top news for Brett Ratner, who, as the NY Post says, has been given her “big break” by the wayward director.
THE timing of Roman Polanski’s arrest in Switzerland on Sunday on a 31-year-old rape conviction couldn’t have been better for Brett Ratner. Hours before Polanski was busted in Zurich, Ratner taped an interview for BlogTalkRadio’s “Movie Geeks United” show and announced he’ll be producing a sequel to Marina Zenovich’s 2008 documentary, “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired.”
More on that film here.
And now back to our main feature:
“The family has forgiven [Polanski]. The victim has forgiven him. The rest of the world has forgiven him,” said Ratner, who cast Polanski as a French detective in his movie “Rush Hour 3.” “The LA judicial system is corrupt. It’s horrible.”
Anyone seen Rush Hour 3? Much of the debate on Polanksi is based on his gifts as a director. Had he produced the dross that is Rush Hour 3 would the great and good be defending his action or calling for him to be shot in the face? Does the artistic value fit the crime?
Scene 1. A courthouse in LA.
Court calls Roman Polanski.
Voiceover: You are herby charged with rape. How do you plead?
Polanski: The Pianist.
You’re free to go. Court calls Paris Hilton…
“Marina screened the movie at my house, and I invited Roman’s friends, like Bob Evans and Warren Beatty,” Ratner said. “A bunch of his friends came to see the movie before Roman even saw it. He wanted it to be an honest depiction of what happened. And I think Marina did a brilliant job.”
The rape of a young teenager is duly presented for our entertainment.
Certificate: 13. PG.

I agree her wishes are very important in this, but we need to hear what they are, from her.
But its now a nasty hornets nest let loose, isn’t it?
World wide all cases of rape/incest/paedo should be subjudice, and only the offending party named when found guilty.

That is true, June, the victim is totally out of the picture and hasn’t nothing more to do with this case. He had already plead guilty so her part is over. It is all about his ’skipping town’ before his sentencing and yet to receive his sentence agreed to or determined by a judge. I’ve been searching the laws, and in the back of my mind I’m thinking he can also be charged for fleeing the country prior to his sentencing and get additional time tacked on.
Now, it was a ‘dirty hand dealt him’ if he was told the agreement over time to be served reached between the Prosecutor and his lawyer was a guarantee. A judge does not have to accept any such agreement in any case that comes before him for sentencing. A judge will hear recommendations for appropriate sentencing under guidelines but he is the one who makes the decision for what he feels is an appropriate punishment. A prosecutor can recommend five years in a case which might have maximum of 15 years attached and the judge can very easily give that person 10 years to serve or full time. Thus, never a guarantee on a judge’s reaction to a recommendation.
Further, in trying sort out why the prosecutor released all the ‘initimate’ acts in the sexual assault, one thought stays with me - he may well be trying to inflame further the outraged reactions to the sex acts performed on her at 13 banking on a Judge being so incensed he throws the maximum time under the guidelines for which ever charge Polanski plead guilty to.
Another problem I’m wondering about and must check out. What he if comes back and his lawyer proves prosecutorial and judge misconduct and the case is thrown out. Can they recharge him with the crime and have another trial? Yet, his victim has taken a firm stand and written letters to the Judge and Prosecutor she wants the case dismissed. She’ll never cooperate and testify again, he can bank on that. However, I would fight extradition all the way, if I were him.

so why on earth did he do a runner if he was only getting ‘time served’? pratt!
I know th woman need not be involved in the legal process but the press are already on her tail and I did read that she and her family were in hiding. (maybe right, maybe not)
Although I think he should be hauled back I do think consideration should be given to her wishes after all this time. whatever they are.

From what I’ve been reading , and understood, and Cheryl might help us here - is that because he legged it he could/should face 4 years in jail. The plea bargaining was for the 42 days he spent in remand at the time, but absconding like he did, the victim need not be involved.
Also there seem to be 2 schools of thought saying being who he is he should get away with it, and it could be that same school of thought are putting words in the victim’s mouth? The other thought is that he should be jailed, and rightly too.

fair enough June - 10 out of 10 to me for lousy observation!!!

That makes sense June as she has been quite vociferous in the US press that she doesn’t want the publicity.
Good old red top rag, being economical with its reporting!

Just out of interest…. does anyone know why this girl / woman was named in the first place? are the laws on anonymity different in US? or were they just different then?
I guess once a name’s out its out…..

are her kids with her?
If she goes public over it all (and I certainly don’t blame her if she does) then I change my mind about him being sent back!
My whole take on this was from her POV not his.
Makes it all a lot simpler if she ‘outs’ herself as opposed to be being hounded by the press.

she’s not in hiding, C&C - she’s in Hawaii and has just given an interview to the Daily Mirror….

Okay, I’ve looked…. the plea bargain was one charge of sexual activity with a minor. So he pled guilty but left the country before sentencing.
The reporting below is why I think he’ll only get a slap on the wrist if/when he does go back.
So why put that woman through it all again? They reckon it could years to extradite him, meanwhile, the victim and her family are in hiding. Justice my eye!

Polanski was accused of drugging and and performing sex acts with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 during a photo shoot at actor Jack Nicholson’s home in Hollywood. At the time, Polanski insisted the sex was consensual, although he still pleaded guilty to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Polanski fled the United States before he could be sentenced and U.S. authorities issued a warrant for his arrest soon after.
Earlier this year, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza acknowledged there was “substantial misconduct” in the original case against Polanski and gave him until May 7 to appear in his court to pursue a filing that could have seen the charges dismissed. Polanski never appeared and the judge refused to throw out the case.

I don’t think he was sentenced was he? didn’t he make off during the gap in between convcition and sentence?
Must look that up later but I think thats how it was.

He needs to come back and do his time. Simple as. He was convicted and sentenced and he fled the country.
