Fort Hood Shootings Latest News: US Soldier Nidal Hasan Shoots 13 Dead
IN the Soldier Readiness Centre Fort Hood, Texas, 13 are shot dead and 31 are wounded. Nidal Hasan is captured. The news:
At least eight people have been shot in an Orlando, Florida, high-rise office building, CNN affiliates report.
As Chelsy say: “Here we go, now we will be getting a rash of shootings”
Woman saves: Kim Munley, a civilian police officer, is the woman who brought Hasan down by shooting him four times before he could murder more.
Woman killed: Chicago - FOX Chicago News has learned that a 21-year-old pregnant woman from the Northwest Side of Chicago was killed in the Fort Hood shooting spree Thursday.
Francheska Velez, a 2006 graduate of Kelvyn Park, recently had returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.
Reader Cheryl writes: The military/government over here never stops with its deceiving and coverups. Six and a half hours they let the press and hence the public believe the shooter was dead! You two know how reporters would think and react when deliberately led to believe and write wrong information and made look the fools six and a half hours later. Guess the Government and military officials needed those 6 1/2 hours to get their stories straight about what was known or not known about the Major! Now the CNN news is talking about the Major was on the ‘radar’ to be watched over the last months for some blogs or other stuff he had written about suicide bombing, his intense dislike for the Iraqi War, he wasn’t going over, etc, etc. etc. CNN with Larry King and Anderson Cooper are far from happy being deceived.
Tim Blair: The evasiveness of media in the immediate wake of the Fort Hood murders is astonishing. The ABC’s Lisa Millar opened her midday report claiming to have “learned quite a lot about the gunman”, then revealed very little of it – apart from that Malik Nadal Hasan had “attracted a lot of harassment because of his last name” and “family background”. This came about, Millar reported, despite Hasan being born and raised in the US. Not mentioned in eight minutes of coverage: Hasan’s faith, which in a case like this is surely of interest.
Andrew Boult: New York Times overlooks that Muslim thing, too. Must be irrelevant, then.
Ditto for the BBC report run on ABC news radio around 2.30pm. The reporter, interviewed by the studio host, could identify only one personal fact of relevance - that the shooter was … a psychiatrist.
Hmm. What would these psychiatrists have against the US military?
The Guardian: “Combat stress: When soldier turns on soldier”
No mentiosn of jihad or Islam, just a list of US soldiers who turned on their own.
Update VI: Via Ed Driscoll:
Patterico notes that the MSM is working overtime to pound this story into a prescribed narrative — when it’s not airbrushing out inconvenient details about the alleged suspect, of course.
And speaking of the MSM narrative, Allahpundit adds that it’s “congealing as we speak”:
Assume you’re an eager beaver reporter who’s as anti-war as the next fellow in the newsroom. How do you frame a story about a murderous lunatic who’s never been deployed overseas to serve your agenda? Why, this way of course: “Fort Hood has felt strain of repeated deployments”.
What Hasan Wrote: It appears to be Hasan’s original Internet posting about suicide bombers in full. Quote:
There was a grenade thrown amongs a group of American soldiers. One of the soldiers, feeling that it was to late for everyone to flee jumped on the grave with the intention of saving his comrades. Indeed he saved them. He inentionally took his life (suicide) for a noble cause i.e. saving the lives of his soldier. To say that this soldier committed suicide is inappropriate. Its more appropriate to say he is a brave hero that sacrificed his life for a more noble cause. Scholars have paralled this to suicide bombers whose intention, by sacrificing their lives, is to help save Muslims by killing enemy soldiers. If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that “IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE” and Allah (SWT) knows best.
Circumstantial evidence: Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats.
The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was killed during the shooting incident that left least 11 others dead and 31 wounded. The officials say they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened…
One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades.
Allah Pundit: CBS reports that Hasan was a licensed psychiatrist in Maryland, of all things. Meanwhile, Kay Bailey Hutchison apparently has info that Hasan was upset about being deployed to Iraq. Which, without further specifics as to why, doesn’t tell us much given the possible motives in play.
Christian Science Monitor (via Malkin): Terry Lee, a retired Army colonel who knew Hasan, told Fox News about a story he heard secondhand. He said a fellow colleague had told him that Hasan had made “outlandish comments” about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and US involvement in them and that “Muslims had a right to rise up and attack Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“[He] made comments about how we shouldn’t be over there – you need to lock it up, Muslims should stand up and fight against the aggressor,” Lee added.
But the suspect’s cousin, Nader Hasan, gave Fox News a different picture. He said his cousin had never deployed but was affected by the war and had been concerned about his impending deployment.
“He would tell us how he would hear things, horrific things, things from war probably affecting him psychologically,” Nader Hasan said.
If this turns out to be a jihad attack, watch for the President to caution against “backlash” and “Islamophobia.”
Sky News: US Army Base Massacre: Psychiatrist Kills 12
Armed with two guns, including a semi-automatic weapon, Major Nidal Malik Hasan started firing at victims at random.
UK Front pages:
Only The Metro free newspaper leads with the news that came too late for the others: “Major massacres 11 at top US base.”
Update V:
LARRY KING JUST RIPPED THE MILITARY A NEW ‘ARSE’ ON TV! HE WAS LIVID THAT THE PRESS WAS DECEIVED BY THE OFFICIALS AND LEAD TO BELIEVE THE SHOOTER WAS DEAD AND NEVER CORRECTED THE NEWS AND LET THEM ANNOUNCE HE WAS DEAD! THEY HAD JUST ANNOUNCED THE TRUTH TO THE PRESS WHEN I SENT YOU THE OTHER CONFIRMATION HE WAS ALIVE.
Update IV:
Spokesman at Fort Hood just confirmed 12 dead that includes the one shooter, 31 wounded, two of those in serious condition. Confirmed the shooter dead was military and 2 suspects are military.
Update III:
Update II: 20 injured
NBC News network said the two suspects were in military uniform and that the shooter-at-large was believed to have a high-powered sniper rifle.
Update I: According to reports, the suspects were in military uniform. More details from MSNBC:
The official would not give [the suspect's] name nor additional details. It was unknown whether victims are soldiers or civilians. One gunman was reportedly in custody and another was on the loose, NBC News said. A third shooter may be involved, according to NBC News affiliate KCEN, which said the person had opened fire on the SWAT team at the base.
Fort Hood is halfway between Austin and Waco, about 60 miles (97 km) from each city, in Texas.
Officials at Fort Hood said two injuries are serious and one person has been arrested in connection to the shooting.
20:50: The Ft. Hood web site says: ”LOCKDOWN: Ft. Hood is closed….
20:43: 7 DEAD 12 WOUNDED AND SHOOTER(S) USED M-16 WEAPONS
20:40: NEWS JUST BROKE OVER BUT THUS FAR NO ONE IS SAYING ANYTHING EXCEPT LARGE NUMBERS SHOT AND MANY KILLED AT FT. HOOD MILITARY BASE IN TEXAS. PENTAGON EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE WHAT IS GOING ON THERE.

Stacey, what he did cannot be laid off on Americans and no way we need feel shame nor apologize for his actions. This a military officer who acted not us!
There are many questions that need to be asked to and answered with honesty by the Military as how this came about. We might want to start the first question along the lines why they stood in front of cameras speaking to the Press and the Public nationwide and deliberately lied and gave false information to mislead the press and public into believing he was dead. When in fact he was taken quickly out of the room when shot and kept hidden away in a hospital room under heavy guard for over 6 hours before they told the truth to the press and the Nation. Why was there need to lie to the Public/Press? What were the true reasons? What was the Military trying to cover up? By any chance did they royally fu re him and knew it? Didn’t they have him under surveillance, even though they knew of his strong beliefs against the war and strong objections over being sent over? They knew of the posting he had made on the internet months ago, that in itself along with other knowledge they had about him they should have placed him instantly under Military Intelligence surveillance.

Wow!! As an American Army Veteran and being part of the human race I am very ashamed and appalled by what has happened. I heard this news from my best friend who lives in England and I must say, it was not a good day to be an American. How disgraceful can we be? I am disgusted and I feel such sorrow for everyone who was involved in anyway. I will not share my opinion on what I think should happen to this “soldier”!!!! When I was a Soldier we stuck together and we were a family… not enemies. My heart breaks at the very thought of the travesty.

It was Joni Mitchell not Carly Simon as well. Greg is singularly ill informed
November 6th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Greg, how would you paraphrase that if he were a Jew? Black? Christian? Least we forget in the rush to further the loathing and condemnation for Muslims, there was Timothy McVeigh, 27 year old Army Veteran, Caucasian, US born and raised, murdered 168 men, women and children in Oklahoma City in 1995 to make his statement against the Federal Government. That was a carefully planned terrorist act!
Thus far, no one has the answer whether Major Hasan, a Muslim, deliberately planned over time to conmit and then executed a terrorist act against the Military and US Government by murdering 13 soldiers and wounding 30 others. However, in time he will stand trial and be executed for the cold blooded murders he committed under Federal Military Law. Well he should be!!

the stresses and strains on those fighting this useless and pointless war are unimaginable to civilians, but the man who did the shooting had NEVER been deployed and therefore he must be trying to justify his actions in another way….
OK so he worked as a psychiatrist with those who HAVE suffered the mental and physical torment of combat, BUT that was his job - he will have trained to become a psychiatrist and therefore should have been able to keep himself detached from the emotions of his patients.
there is no excuse and it seems to me that the man became radicalised when he couldn’t get his own way, ie. avoid deployment.
that not only makes him a murderer, but a snivelling coward as well….

Anorak, the death toll is now 13 and 30 wounded.

GB has committed political suicide, like his predecessor who ‘nominated’ him to succeed he’s been an abysmal failure…along with NuLabour.
We shall hopefully be having an election next May, but the Tories are an unknown element these days, so I do wonder if most constituents will vote Independant, as they have no party loyalty to uphold and the voter comes first.
This whole charade out in Iraq and Afghanistan is all down to Bush and Blair, we all said so at the time, and how right we were. Despite the waste of life already I think we should withdraw, we were never on the defensive anyway, just there to attack…remember ’shock and awe’ when Baghdad was bombed, and then a hasty retreat was beat leaving them to sort our mess? Is it really any better out there now without Saddam and the millions of innocent victims?
All to glorify two of the most incompetent* politicians this world has ever seen.
* There are better words to use

It was just announced the Major is NOT dead and in fact is in the hospital being treated for wounds he suffered when he was shot being stopped from shooting more people. He has not yet been questioned. The 12 people announced dead were all victims.

June, I had read what happened to your soldiers. And I’ve been reading the other articles over there also in various newspapers about the lack of support or equipment your soldiers are expected to fight without. When is Gordon Brown up for nomination or election as Prime Minister next? From what I read he is skating on very thin ice anyhow, isn’t he? With the scathing articles I’ve been reading over there on Defence issues I’d think he is very worried and quite nervous about any future as a Prime Minister. Can your Parliament vote on the War situation and withdraw the troops even if he doesn’t have the gonads to do it?
Honestly don’t know what Obama is up to. Right now with the polls ratings, he would not be re-elected if running now. Thanks to him the Republicans are back in office in VA. I didn’t even waste my time going to vote this week, as I knew the Democrats would be voted out reading the polls ratings on Obama and no way my vote would help.
Anyhow, he was on TV a couple of hours ago and talking about the tragedy and said he was the Commander in Chief and said along the lines it was his job to keep our soldiers safe over there and especially safe here in their own Country. That didn’t win any brownie points with me or even my vote next time round. That man had increased our troops over there some months ago and the public wasn’t told. On top of that he has promised to send over 40,000 more troops.
He best take heed of this tragedy today at Ft. Hood. There is Nationwide coverage and it is all coming out about the stresses on our boys, the depressions and stresses they already have just knowing they are being sent over, the mental and physical conditions they are coming back in and our Government is not and was not prepared to handle all that. Our death tolls are increasing in numbers by the day over there. If that man even wants to run for dog catcher next election year he best get us out of that country as fast as he can. The people were conned by and believed Bush and they had to learn the hard way. I don’t think very many will be conned again.
It is great, June, that our countries stand united and are there when needed for each other. Now the time has come to stand united and get our soldiers out of Iraq and Afghanistann as soon as possible. Surely you are as tired as I am of the ‘follow the leader’ games we play together and get ourselves into messes we don’t belong in.

June, I’m waiting to see what comes out in any interrogation of the one suspect now held. The other one was released! It came out early on in the breaking news of this tragedy about the suicides the past months at Ft. Hood. No comments made on that since by any Military Spokesman talking to the reporters. No doubt the Government will do its best to make certain it is not mentioned again nor confirm its true. This Government is not and was not prepared to deal with the mental stresses and mental conditions this War has caused our boys. Our boys are breaking down mentally. Look at the case several months ago when one of our soldiers went over the edge and shot and killed 5 of our soldiers over there.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt had the right idea in World War II.
To paraphrase with the help of Carly Simon.
“Take all the Muslims, put them in a Islamic Museum. Charge the people a buck and a half to see them.”
Not only will this cure America of terrorism but could generate enough cash to pay for universal health care.

I’ve just been watching Question Time, and after our losses this week due to a renegade police trainee killing five unarmed personnel and injuring about 6 more very badly. There is a hue and cry to bring them home, all the EU and NATO countries involved there have set pull out dates, the only two who haven’t are you and us.
The soldiers out there too have been somewhat misled that we are criticising them for the lack of progress made, this is not true, the target of the criticism is the UK Govt and its failure to provide for them.
Our Govts do want to keep the real truth from us all, Afghanistan is a difficult country, the terrain is dreadful and ever since the 1800’s no country has succeeded in making any impact, this included the Russian army and all its might.
Any reason is given to us by our Govts, heroin, terrorism and Al Qaeda and attacks on Pakistan.
November 6th, 2009 at 1:05 am
Apparently the gunman was Jordanian, but they also think he changed his name at some point when he became Muslim.
Also he was a psychiatrist.
The base is said to be where all the mental problems that affect soldiers get treated.
Up to 80,000 personnel are there in the daytime, including civilian workers
November 6th, 2009 at 1:04 am
Tom Jones, I thought that also when read the name; however, more is being reported on TV right now and he was being deployed over to Iraq and from what they are reporting he was very upset and distressed over that. So may well have been just what it took to put him over the ‘edge’ of sanity. I honestly don’t think many people in the public realize the horrendous mental stress this war is putting on our boys going over and many 3 and 4 times on tours.
I don’t know about the UK but this Government is not telling the whole truth about this War and the shape our boys are returning in from Iraq and Afghanistan. We have boys coming back in terrible mental conditons not to mention the horrendous physical conditons.
