Putting A Price On Jean Charles de Menezes’ Life
THE family of Jean Charles de Menezes are in line to receive a pay out. The Mail says that while former Metropolitan police leader Sir Ian Blair scored £400,000 pay-off, and a book deal, Mr de Menezes’s family are to get “as low as” £100,000” for their relative being shot in the head by police at Stockwell tube station.
Anorak reader Yampster says:
If you are going to kill the wrong man, make sure he comes from a poor country.
Well, perhaps But the money is not compensation for hurt feelings or damage but for loss of earnings. Had Mr de Menezes been richer and higher earner, his family would be in line for more cash.
Can a price be put on a man’s life? Well, if you are sticking to the letter of the law, it would seem so. But whether a country’s law that allows an innocent man to be repeatedly shot in the head by its police force right, can be debated…
