Join The Campaign For Straight Gay Marriages
IF you are not gay, can you still have gay wedding, a so-called civil partnership? If you’re not a dog can you still enter Crufts? If you aren’t a vampire can you still drink the blood of a virgin?
Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle, both 25, want to challenge “discriminatory” UK laws which restrict civil partnerships to same-sex couples. Having been denied a civil partnership at London’s Islington Register Office, Mr Freeman and Miss Doyle are protesting. Says he:
“It would be lovely to formalise our relationship but we are completely turned off by the whole institution of marriage because it discriminates against gay people.”
So don’t get married and live together. Become common law husband and wife. No. not good enough. They want a straight civil partnership. And they want to tell you about it:
“We think gay people should be able to have a standard marriage and straight people should be able to have a civil partnership.”
Miss Doyle adds:
“We want a choice and all other couples should also have a choice, irrespective of their sexuality.”
Here comes Peter Tatchell – “This segregation based on sexuality is just as reprehensible as a legal apartheid based on race”:
“The ban on heterosexual civil partnerships is heterophobic. It is discriminatory and offensive.”
You offended? Oh, Brave new World. An Islington Council spokesman says:
“The law dictates that a civil partnership is only for couples of the same sex. The council must follow the law, of course, and so we have not been able to accept Mr Freeman and Ms Doyle’s application for a civil partnership.”
Which means that they can get married, or not. Their choice. As for discrimination, aren’t all laws discriminatory?

HURR DURR LAWS DISCRIMINATE AGAINST CRIMINALS AMIRITE?
Yeah, very clever. The laws that say there’s one rule for one set of a people and another for another, those are discriminatory. It’s pretty easy to spot them, you don’t need to play dumb.
As Tatchell points out - and you blithely ignore - civil partnerships don’t provide the full range of benefits that marriage provides. Even if they did, it would still be wrong for the same reason as segregation was wrong in the USA in the 1960s. “Separate but equal” was rightly seen as nothing but an excuse to pander to people who hate the minority in question.
> He can also (you got there before me didn’t you?) apply to have a same sex marriage.
No he can’t, same-sex marriage is illegal in this country, which is kind of the entire goddamn point. Do try to pay attention.

I believe that in Lesbian marriages the one in the Dungarees and the Doc Martins cuts the cake. I must admit my knowledge of same sex matrimonial protocol is limited to the documentary I saw of Elton taking David up the aisle. A lovely ceremony.

Mr Freeman could put himself up for gender reassignment. Once he has been accepted on the scheme he can apply to be treated as a woman and get a ‘Certificate of Acceptance’. He can then legally use ladies’ toilets (although, he may have to sit down) and he can embark on a lesbian affair with Ms Doyle. He can also (you got there before me didn’t you?) apply to have a same sex marriage. Of course Ms Doyle could apply for gender reassignment as a male but lesbians have more fun. Allegedly.
