After Haiti, Now Casper The Commuting Cat Dies

by | 18th, January 2010

casper-catIN Plymouth, tragedy has struck, literally. Casper the commuting cat is dead. Casper the commuting cat has been hit by a – oh, irony of ironies – a car.

Says the Plymouth Herald:

A MUCH loved Barne Barton cat who gained international acclaim has sadly died after being hit by a car.

As Anorak writer AGW puts it:

Pathos, tragedy, grief and above all – local.

I can see the News Editor: “That Haiti stuff’s a long way from Plymouth Dockyard.”

As for Casper the cat ghost:

Casper the commuting cat, fast became a celebrity on Plymouth buses when he used to politely queue with the other passengers and hop aboard to travel around the city.

And now?

But recently a notice was put up at Casper’s usual bus stop saying: “Many local people knew Casper, who loved everyone. He also enjoyed the bus journeys.

“Sadly a motorist hit him… and did not stop. Casper died from his injuries. He will be greatly missed… he was a much loved pet who had so much character. Thank you to all those who befriended him.”

Says the Plymouth Herald, in tribute:

He proved a hit with drivers and customers alike, who always made sure he returned home safely.

Or not. For any mourners wishing to walk the Casper route:

Casper’s journey took him from just outside his house in Poole Park Road to the final stop at Royal Parade and back, via St Budeaux Square, HMS Drake, Keyham, Devonport and Stonehouse.

It being what Casper would have wanted…
