G20 In Pictures: Sergeant Delroy Smellie Versus Nicola Fisher, Not Ian Tomlinson

by | 22nd, March 2010

POLICE SERGEANT Delroy Smellie arrived at City of Westminster Magistrates Court, London, charged with assaulting one Nicola Fisher during the G20 protests of April 2, 2009. Smellie – the more you say the better and better it sounds – has pleaded not guilty to a charge of common assault. Climate protester Nicola Fisher has already given evidence to the Home Affairs Committee in London. Sergeant Delroy Smellie has not.

Is that fair?

But wait: At City of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, the alleged victim, protester Nicola Fisher, is reportedly, “unwilling” to attend court. Why?

Thought: A cop by the name of PC Ward is allegedly telling pals on his Facebook page he “couldn’t wait to bash some long-haired hippies” at the G20 protests.

In other news, no-one has been made to answer formerly for the death of Ian Tomlinson, the man who died at the G20 bash. He was roughed up by the police for the apparent crime of not doing what he was told to by the coppers, who might have removed their badge numbers, as some did. Or was his crime walking on the cracks in the pavement?

Thought: A picture of a senior policeman carrying paper is sufficient to necessitate his resignation and a picture of another officer of the law hitting someone to the floor is not.

A question: if a policeman removes item of his uniform – at the protest several officers removed their badge numbers – how can a citizen be certain the man with big stick is not just some nutter with a big stick , or an armoured car (see pictures)?

The Metropolitan police authority (MPA), the force watchdog, found:

“…although several officers were not wearing their badge numbers at the April protests, neither they nor their supervisors were formally disciplined. A small number had been given a verbal warning, the report found, but it was not clear whether the advice to the officers was recorded on file.”

So, all eyes on Delroy Smellie, who becomes the face of all that went before.
