James Bulger: Jon Venables And The Geelong Granny Killer

by | 29th, March 2010

JAMES Bulger’s killer Jon Venables has slipped from the news radar, but his story has travelled the globe. The Geelong Advertiser, in Australia, reports that James’s mother Denise Fergus “says a granny killer living in Belmont has lost his right to keep his identity a secret”.

The mother of a child killed by children in Liverpool identifies with the murder of a “granny” killed in Australia. Does one case need the other?

Denise Fergus says she feels Geelong people’s pain about an unrepentant killer living among them.

The link between the stories is not only about a life taken, a crime; it is about the killer.

The Geelong Advertiser recalls the death of 75-year-old Marie Zidan in 2000. She was sexually assaulted and killed.

A spokesman for Ms Fergus said the granny killer, who committed the heinous crime with a mate when they were 15 and 16 years old, had run out of chances.

Denise Fergus is no longer the mother of toddler killed in terrible and unusual circumstances. She is a spokesperson, a touchstone for crime. Her name will give your story and campaign a push.

And she need not speak because media-savvy Denise Fergus has got a “spokesperson”, who tells us:

“Denise is very concerned to hear of the shocking details of this case in Geelong and the fact that secrecy is being maintained after the killer re-offended. She shares the concerns of the Geelong community and believes they have a right to know that there is killer cloaked by secrecy living in their midst. She agrees that it would be in the interests of justice for the Geelong killer to be tried in open court, and named, now that he has committed new offences.”

Like Jon Venables, this convicted killer is back behind bars. Having only just emerged from a nine-year sentence, the killer, 26, is “charged with handling and receiving stolen goods and obtaining property by deception”.

Denise Fergus’ spokesperson continues:

“There are chilling echoes of the way the case of Jon Venables has been handled in England.”

Jon Venables has not yet been charged with any offence.
