Meow Meow: Mephedrone Is This Week’s Scare Story
MEOW Meow, aka mephedrone, is in the news. The Sun talks of a “TWO-WEEK RACE TO BAN MEOW”. The Sun says that in two weeks there is to be an election, maybe, and after that Parliament breaks up.
So. It’s a race against time. Maybe the election should be delayed?
The paper says the drug must be banned “after 26 deaths”. We hear of a girl of 14 “lucky to be alive”. She took meow and collapsed. We’re not told if the girl had any pre-existing medical conditions, had been drinking or taking other drugs, only that she collapsed in a Tesco car park. And the police say she is “lucky to be alive”. Although, she made a full recovery.
It is left to the Swindon Advertiser to complete the picture:
She had taken a cocktail of alcohol and the drug.
No proof yet exists that toxic meow meow specifically resulted in death. In place of facts we do hear from bereft parents who have lost their children. They, understandably, want the drug banned. They want their child’s death to count for something. It’s emotive stuff.
And Closer magazine joins the narrative and tells its readers:
“As the legal drug mephedrone claims yet another life… Last week Lois Waters became the sixth person to die after taking mephedrone – the dangerous drug sweeping the country.”
Six? Not 26, then? The Mail says the drug has been “linked” to 25 deaths. On March 24th, the Sun reported on Lois Waters:
The deaths of at least five other Brits – aged 16 to 49 – have been linked to mephedrone since last September.
But not to worry because the Star says:
“Meow-Meow in banned”.
Only it isn’t. It might be made a Class B Drug. No, not Class A. The “Killer” drug is not that dangerous, maybe.
In the meantime look out for lots of hacks buying meow meow to get a story.

Dairy..Lets agree to disagree…I still feel that there is a majority using all sorts of drugs & substances to feel better, legal or illegal .prescribed or pushed.and whether you feel it right or wrong….most people feel the need to get high ..synthetically or naturally……it is a personal choice .

I agree C&C…and what is worse than politicians and more so, the Press, patronising the people for theirs & their commercial partners profits & power?
March 31st, 2010 at 12:46 pm
it’s still a minority Percy, no matter how good it makes you feel!!

and in other circles coke will also always be socially acceptable. More acceptable that nipping out for a ciggie thats for sure.
Those of us who are (ahem) older don’t have a problem with saying no but youngsters have always taken a chance and always will.
Ban one and another appears immediately.
Its the governments band-wagon jumping every time that gets me. Creeps…..

…maybe, dear Dairy..you have’nt been out dancing & trancing for a while…you should …it is a liberating & live experience & should never be illegal
March 31st, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Dairy..try to understand that Drone is mostly used as a dance drug…i.e. it enhances & prolongs your experience to lose yourself in dance & trance. On the music & dance scene substances like drone & ecstasy and many more have always been & always will be socially acceptable.
March 31st, 2010 at 12:14 pm
Percy – I understand your point, but I would argue that it is most definitely not the majority who find it acceptable… to put it in basic terms, nobody would turn a hair at somebody saying “I am going out for a drink”, but most people’s eyebrows would be raised at the statement “I am going out to do some drugs”…?
you can’t put the genie back in the bottle, I agree, but equally there is no sense in smashing the bottle into smithereens either…?
there have to be some boundaries somewhere – whether everyone agrees about where the boundaries are is another matter, IMO.

Dairy..I beg to disagree to a degree…the number of recreational “drug” users in this country is unknown but I would hazard a guess that a large proportion of the poulation indulge to greater or lesser degree and this does not take into account the large proportion on prescription drugs.Stimulant substances have been socially acceptable for as long as man has had the mind to experiment with his surroundings and seek to expand his experience and as such have always been socially acceptable except to the hyper hypocrites whose false sense of morality and patronising of the public cause more harm than good. Surely in this day & age we should expect reasonable & rational policies that allow us the freedom to choose our chosen poison rather than have other peoples polluted ideas pushed on the population. The legalisation & licensing of a lot of these substances is the only way forward. You cannot put the genie back in the box .

methinks cynically that the government is simply electioneering on the Drone issue!
Better than explaining why we’re still in Adghanistan!

I am sure it’s a lot more, C&C, but alcohol has the veneer of being socially acceptable – in reasonable doses….
drugs, whether legal or not, do not have the same level of social acceptability.
nicotine has been reduced to being socially unacceptable, but is still not illegal – probably because, as you suggest, the remuneration to the Treasury is too great to put a total stop to it.
we can argue the rights or wrongs of this until we are blue in the face, but it is hard to see how the status quo will change in this respect?
March 31st, 2010 at 10:46 am
A ‘legal high’ thats possibly killed 26 people in the past year.
Hmmmmmm I wonder how many people died in the same year from the ‘legal high’ of alcohol? You know, the one the government ‘deals’ to top up its coffers.
Just wondering………

@Beepbeep….I think I’ll stick to calling it drone to save my mistakes…thanks for the correction.
March 30th, 2010 at 11:19 am
@ Percy. There is no such drug as Methodrone. Mephedrone not to be confused with Methadone, the synthetic opioid used in heroin abuse cases. Mephedrone is a cathinone compound. Soon to be outlawed with a whole host of other cathinone compounds.
March 30th, 2010 at 10:38 am
Salt & sugar are similar in appearance and effect to methodrone yet are allowed as addictive additives to most processed foodstuffs and are known to cause health problems & deaths by the thousands. …yet they are cheap legal and pushed on children from birth. Maybe they should be classified as Class B drugs too….. If the press & politicians are truly concerned about the health of the nation?
March 30th, 2010 at 10:16 am
what is the definition of “linked” in these cases….? does it mean they definitely took it and therefore it might have contributed to their death or are there other circumstances which could have caused death, but which are unrelated to the drug…?
or is it not certain whether they took it or not?
from reports I have seen, there are a multitude of different substances currently “legally sold” around the world, the effects of which on a human body are completely unknown.
why anyone with half a brain would want to ingest something designed for a plant is beyond me…
