Warmists Sell Petermann Glacier As The Global Warming Titanic

by | 7th, August 2010

A HUGE lump of ice has broken off from Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland. Andreas Muenchow, of the University of Delware’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, says the ice sheet covers 100 square miles. Trudy Wohlleben of the Canadian Ice Service, was the first to report the broken ice. Neither mention global warming being behind the split.

The ice did not melt. The ice cracked, or calved, as is the terminology. In all, the Petermann Glacier lost about one-quarter of its 43-mile long floating ice-shelf.

It’s a pretty big deal in ice terms. But can it be made worse by a voracious media?

How big is it?

How high is it?

NASA images show the island has an area of 259 sq km and a thickness up to half the height of the 443m Empire State Building.

Is it Good For Us?

“The freshwater stored in this ice island could keep the Delaware or Hudson rivers flowing for more than two years. It could also keep all U.S. public tap water flowing for 120 days,” Muenchow said – CNN

But Ice Will Kill Us All

Environmentalists say ice melt is being caused by global warming with Arctic temperatures in the 1990s reaching their warmest level of any decade in at least 2,000 years, according to a study published in 2009. Current trends could see the Arctic Ocean become ice free in summer months within decades, researchers predict. – CNN

But the ice did not melt. The ice cracked.

CLIMATE change has been blamed for floods that have killed thousands and left millions homeless from Pakistan to North Korea, fires and a heatwave in Russia that have left 5000 dead and disrupted global food markets, and a severe tropical storm threatening Bermuda.

Greenpeace Knows

Last month, Greenpeace researchers warned that the Petermann Glacier, the northern hemisphere’s largest, was likely to crack soon.

Crack. Not melt.

“Ocean warming currents are circulating around the fjord here and eroding the underbelly of Petermann Glacier at an incredible rate, which is 25 times that of the surface melt,” Alun Hubbard, a glaciologist at the University Of Wales, told the Sydney Morning Herald at the time. “There’s been a revelation in the last couple of years in the role that warming oceans play in triggering the enhanced acceleration, break-up and thinning of these outlet glaciers.” – AOL

Not Global Warming

Prof Andreas Muenchow “said it was not clear if the event was due to global warming.

The scientific fact is followed by the BBC hack saying:

The first six months of 2010 have been the hottest on record globally, scientists have said.

No proof is given. But if you want to link the split with global warming, the BBC approves.

Look Out! If It hits Canada, Canada goes down!
