Shrien Dewani And The Death Of South African Wine And Tourism

by | 8th, December 2010

SHRIEN Dewani left City of Westminster Magistrates Court, London, in the back of a prison van. The Bristol man is plotting the murder of his wife Anni Dewani on their honeymoon. He says he is innocent.

South African taxi driver Zola Tongo says Shrien Dewani offered him £1,300 to kill his wife. (Read his full statement.)

Anni Dewani died in Gugulethu township, a place with more than 700 murders in the past five years. A dangerous place to honeymoon, right?

One interesting angle is how the murder has impacted on tourism. South African wine writer Neil Pendrock takes a view:

Press reports link the Dewani murder to Mzoli’s, a butchery come African braaihouse in Gugulethu that had already closed when the honeymooners arrived, forcing them to drive further into the township. While any murder is a tragedy, if crime should scare away patrons from pioneering restaurants like…Mzoli’s, it is bad news for the SA wine industry trying desperately to break out of a Whites Only laager.

Mr Shrien is seemingly bound for extradition to SA.
