RIP Havildar Lachhiman Gurung: Remembering A Brave Man
RIP Havildar Lachhiman Gurung. He won the Victoria Cross for his work with the Gurkha Rifles in Burma in May 1945. One night, over 200 Japanese soldiers attacked. Gurung was alone in his post. He held his position, picking up grenades thrown his way and tossing them back at the enemy. The third grenade exploded, damaging his face, legs and arm. The enemy massed tanks and charged. Gurung loaded his rifle and fired over and over. In the morning 31 bodies lay before his position.
Lachhiman Guran was 4ft 11in tall. In the fray he had lost his right hand and the use of his right eye.
In his latter years Lachhiman Gurung was a key part in the campaign fronted by actress Joanna Lumley to win Gurkhas the right to stay in this country.
